Amana Tool - 3Fl 2-3/4" D Spoilboard 1/2" Shk (RC-2263), Industrial Grade

I had been using the RC-2250 for the last couple of years to flatten slab lumber. I upgraded to the RC-2263 because I was looking for a wider bit. I’ll admit I was skeptical of this design at first because of how little contact the 3 small cutter make with the material. Additionally, I was a little turned off at the cost of upgrading to the higher quality cutters ($25 each x 3=$75). BUT!! The quality of cut produced by this bit (RC-2263) is 1000% better than the RC-2250!!! With the 2250 I would always get a slight bit of deflection in the bit that would leave distinct lines from each pass. I had always assumed that my sled/router was slightly un-level. However, Using the same setup, with the 2263, my passes are nearly perfectly smooth. And I haven’t even installed the higher grade cutters yet!3 things to note with the RC-22631. You really need a 3+ hp router to effectively run a bit this size2. The three flute design is basically shaped like a “fan.” While this is excellent for moving chips away from the cutters, the air turbulence and velocity generated Is so great that the chips are “thrown” before they can be sucked up by my 6” dust collection hose attached to the sled. And, I am running the 5 hp CVmax (ClearVue) cyclone dust collector. I’ll definitely have to redesign the dust port on the sled.3. This bit is LOUD. I have not taken any decibel measurements. However, with the RC-2250 I did not find it necessary to use heating protection. While using the RC-2263, hearing protection is a must.I have flattened approximately 500 square feet of red oak, walnut and pecan so far without issue. Later today I will be using it to flatten epoxy and am interested to see If there will be tear-out issues I have had with every other bit I have used. I will update how this bit performs.Update: I used this bit to level epoxy and for the first time I have found a bit that does not cause tear-out! I am in love with this bit!!

I received this bit today and can honestly say that it's is a monster! The problem is that 4 out of 5 of the carbide inserts were chipped. Only one of them was flawless. I'm leaving a bad review for now because I expected 5 flawless inserts for the near $200 I spent. If they send me new inserts without any hassle I will update the review. I attached a picture of each insert.*UPDATE* I got hold of Amana and they offered to send me new inserts free of charge, so I am changing the review to 4 stars for now. I have not had a chance to use the tool yet since my machine arrives in a week. It appears to be good quality and should work great, but I was definitely annoyed that it arrived damaged and that I had to deal with getting replacement inserts. This is why I am giving it 4/5 stars for now. Will update after I get to use the tool if I feel that the rating should be changed.

I like Amana tools generally, and have thousands of dollars of their tooling...most of their stuff is a very good value for the money, but this is an exception.This insert surfacing head has worked well on our 12hp spindle. The only complaint I have is that the inserts are very expensive for being a simple 12x12mm (but with a clipped corner). It will cost well over $120 to put new inserts in. At 5x or more the cost of standard 12mmx12mm inserts I feel a little ripped off every time I replace the tips.If you can buy a cutter that uses standard inserts, pass this one up. Cost of inserts over the long run is only worth it if you have a large machine and need the cutting width for lower cycle times. If the extra .75 pass width will lower your cycle times, maybe the high recurring cost will be worth it to you.

Purchased for the CNC. First off I really like the bit, it cuts very well.Now the bad: the tool is indeed 1 1/2” wide, however it only has a 1 - 1.1” flat cut. When taking .040 off per pass, the sides never engage.Using the amana tool database for fusion 360 will leave you with uncut areas because it thinks it can take a full 1.5” cut.The upgraded cutters with the DLC coating come in a 1 pack so be prepared to pay $75+.I’ve been using the stock blades and it works in MDX, walnut, and hard maple with no issues.I’m keeping it because I love the cut, but I feel misled on everything else.

High quality tool, works great for spoilboard surfacing. Wanted to give 3 stars because the replacement inserts are so expensive. I would have rated it 5 stars if the inserts were $5-$10 each, not $25 each...the tool requires 5.

Does a great job of removing LOTS of material, with greater width and cut depth allowances, quickly. However, warning : be prepared to have a LOT more airborne dust in the CNC machine vicinity if you don't have a high CFM dust collector. My original spoilboard planer is a 2 cutter, 2.5" width spec, and I have little issue with sucking up its dust....but it requires about a third more passes to do the same thing.One other thing to note: you cannot use this for large area squared corner pockets...…..the knives mill a 45 degree corner which would have to be removed with the additional pass of a flat endmill.

For over 10 years I've been planing and surfacing hardwoods, composites (mdf, ldf, plys), and others. Early I had used standard router bits, so-called planing bits (like Magnate 2708) which leave tool mill patterns, burns, and even tear-outs where tufts of wood grain get pulled up and out.Just before getting this new Amana RC-2259 I had been using the Amana RC-2258... the 2258 worked very well most of the time, but did burn at times (not often) when when planing hard maple and no matter what feedrate and speed/rpm changes I would try. As a side note: burning is often caused by feedrate too low, speed/rpm too high, not enough depth of cut, or dull bits.This new Amana RC-2259 is awesome. It really does leave a glass-like surface and is also very forgiving with regard to feeds and speeds.

I was not disapointed by the finish of this Amana Tool cutter. The performance was real smooth in my Milwaukee 18V router. No noticable vibration.
