Takes a beating and hold up well...
So we haven't used this new one yet but it is EXACTLY the same as the one that was bought for my son at the start of his 6th grade year. And let me tell you, every year he has chosen to carry his 'day' around in that bookbag instead of using his locker for most things. It weighs a ton! Like 20+ pounds. Probably closer to 30. The zipper finally gave way and wants to separate but seriously, he just finished 9th grade and it broke the last week of school for him. If you didn't know about the zipper issue, you'd think it was practically brand new. It doesn't stain much that I can tell and it doesn't rip or tear. Only cosmetic damage. When asked what he would like to get as a replacement he wanted the same bag and the same color. In the pictures, you see the brand new bag and the one he used for 3 years. And let me tell you, that bag has been dropped to the floor every day at home and who knows what at school. :) It's been tossed in the back of the van and crowded in the foot area of the front passenger seat. Well worth the price than having a bag too small and needing to be replaced each year. Highly recommend. Very spacious. Fits a water bottle on the side and my son likes putting pens/pencils in that spot too. The bags ARE the same size, I checked. The new one just looks a little smaller because nothing is in it and the straps are still pulled tight. My son's still has quite a bit in it.

Great bag!
We had this exact backpack for 3 years of elementary school. When it started looking bad (it still worked fine then) I changed brands. For 2 years I bought a different brand and had to replace it before the school year was out. So I went back. This is a durable bag, is a great value for the cost. The color is great (navy) and it is sturdy and easy to travel with. It functions as it should and has plenty of pockets including a laptop one. Very durable and I would definitely recommend it.

Several design changes I like over the original
I just got it and noticed a number of updated features: nylon material seems stronger, claims water resistant (no longer has a rain cover in base, redesigned harness and nicely adjustable cross strap which seems better, bigger water bottle pockets (maybe the bottles won't fall out when I take the pack off), no waist strap (which may be the only negative as I used that to take a heavy load off my shoulders on long hikes), the headphone compartment now is right side up so stuff won't fall out when you open it (but still too small a pocket for my over the ear Jabra's), zippers seem to have been redesigned - will see if the stitching lasts (previous models zipper stitches came loose after two years of use and bag was useless after that). The two main pockets have a nylon flap over it (rain protection?) but it definitely is stiff and makes using the zippers difficult - I fold it over backwards. Added soft lining to tiny front media pockets and added a mesh bag to the mid-pocket, retained all the nice features of the front pocket (key hook, small zippered compartment, separate nylon compartments for pens and sunscreen, etc). back seems to have been improved with padding with air groove/ spine relief. For the price I'm pretty happy, retains the side compression straps I use to get the bag thru airline size restrictions, still has a "secret" vertical side pocket which is nice for passport or extra cash or important documents - will update when I get back from 11 week trek in Asia as to how it holds up to daily use.

Nice - Mid Weight Backpack!
We buy these backpacks as old ones completely wear out! This version is a nice fabric weight ( pretty sturdy), lots of pockets (nice to have the small top pocket in front - many don't), and fun patterns. We will always buy High Sierra because their quality is so great!

Very Roomy Backpack
Very roomy and adequate for use as a day pack, which is my primary use. Lot of zippers, compartments and a nice felt lined small compartment for your iPod and/or phone. It does stand up by itself. Downsides: 1) the straps are not really well padded, so somewhat uncomfortabe; 2) the zipper on the main compartment is difficult to zip - this because there is a kind of cover over the zipper that interferes with the zipper operation. You can try and "fold" this zipper cover over, but it always manages to fall back in place. The cover is supposed to deflect water I suppose, but the design is a bit annoying as it is a constant interference.

Great travel bag
Bought this bag for travel to replace an older model that I had for 10 years. This bag has plenty of pockets, the zippered side and inner pockets are great to keep your belongings secure. I use this for flights, and going to the beach.

Terrible quality
Barely a month and it ripped! Can't get a warranty replacement for the company because unable to register the item as Sierra says it's not one of their items! Can't return to Amazon because a few days past return window now I am stuck with an expensive and useless fake bag

My kid refuses to use locker....everything in this bag.
This poor bag is stuffed beyond reasonable. We are 8 months into abusing this thing. they have had no complaints so far and they are a teen! I should ask to weigh it just to get a sense of how ridiculous this is. Anyway, good bag with lots of nooks for stuff. After having it over 4 months, "I didn't know there was a pocket here!"This will probably be the first bag that I will replace with the same one when it is destroyed. I might even send it back to High Sierra so they can study it.
