Purchased for a novice teen bonsai enthusiast. The book is the best part with slick colorful engaging photos on every page. The whole things smells bad. I think it’s the bag it comes in. The package can be easily opened the repackaged for gifting, so I aired it all out a few days and washed the tools. If helped some, but would need to air out a few weeks to get rid of the odor (chemical or oil smell). The heads on the shovels and rakes come off easily, so while I had it open I took them off and applied some e6000 glue to the handles and stuck them back on. Scissors are sharp. Pleased with this purchase.

Case came with a weird smell. I love the book though! It was very helpful. I used them to pot and prune my first bonsai! The big scissors were nice and sharp, haven't tried the smaller ones yet. Didn't have any rusting issues with my set. For the price it was perfect! I may upgrade if I don't kill my first few trees, but for some one just starting out it is a wonderful set. Wish it came with mesh and wire though.

I love the book. It has color pictures and easy to follow instructions. First time I've seen this.

The set itself appears good. Not Japanese quality tools but good for a beginner - exactly what you'd expect for the price. However, once I unsealed the package it had a strong smell of gasoline. I dont believe it was Amazon because the smell was only inside the packaging. The bamboo brush smelled like it was soaked in it.

I really like this kit, because it is the perfect thing for beginners, like myself. The book really helped, and I was able to buy and trim a bonsai yesterday. It is a really good gift for other people who are looking into bonsai, since the tools are sturdy and will last a long time. I am loving this bonsai kit, and I would buy again.
