A great cooler for a very special market, not for everybody
HR22 is a decent cooler all around, but doesnt take the crown in value nor performance, its a cooler that cost too much that has a very small niche market.Pros:- Best fanless cooler that Thermalright has developed- Doesn't take the first PCIe slot- Great quality, looks amazing, there is nothing bad that i saw, tbh the best craftsmanship i seen on coolers- As usual the mounting is top of the line, very solid, easy to mount, probably the best that i have used.- Comes with a very nice duct, that people with 120mm fan might find it useful but for me was useless since it was 140mm exhaust fan.Cons:- Price, its way over what it should be, all the twin towers will out perform it with fans for less money- Weight, at 1100g+ starts to get dangerous on a side mounted motherboard, be careful if you move it a lot.- No fans included, given that it comes with a vent duct, for the price it should come with fans and let the user decide if he uses them.- Size, while in height is even smaller than HR02 macho by 4mm, the overall size of it is massive, and even though it doesn't overlap with the PCIe, in certain cases and sizes might be a little too big like mini itx case. Makes harder to install cables or manage yourself after installing it with things close to the cpu socket. Its not a bad cooler, the biggest problem is that with fans it performs very similar to the Thermalright Macho Rev. A (BW) (=HR-02 Macho + Support Socket 2011 + Screw Driver) , a cooler that sells for half the price, and has a fan included, but pure fanless the HR22 will outperform the HR02 no doubt, but the HR22 is not as good to sustain a Haswell Quad fanless under stress, while other coolers similarly priced like NoFan CR-95C Copper IcePipe Fanless CPU Cooler will perform better fully fanless at the expense of needing more space and losing 2 PCIe slots. If you are not going fanless go with HR02 Macho, much better value for the money, if you are going fanless consider the Nofan95, the only place i would recommend it if you need the PCIe slots and you going fanless. The cooler simply needs to be cheaper than it is, my personal estimate as the HR02 was (not the macho) $80 would be a fair price that might make it interesting, where most of the flagship twin towers retail, given that its not meant to compete with them and its aimed at another market, i just cant justify spending more than $100 on a cooler that will not outperform similar on their range or lower with fan.If you are a thermalright fan and want the best performance for the money go with Thermalright Macho Rev. A (BW) (=HR-02 Macho + Support Socket 2011 + Screw Driver) , if you want a higher end cooler for overclocking go with the Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E Dual Fan Universal CPU Cooler , it will even end up cheaper and outperform it. This is not a fail for thermalright, simply has a very small market and there are very capable coolers all around it that will be better options once out the targeted market.

If you are using an Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z the AMD anchoring bracket is too big. You will have to buy a Thermalright AMD BTK Rev. C.Its 3 starts for now cause I have yet to test it on my FX-9590. If it handles it well then it will become 4 starts. If it handles the heat REALLY well then I will overlook the anchoring bracket not fitting and give it 5 stars.

Five Stars
Old school heatsink but it still works great! What happened to Thermalright anyway..

Still a rock star but not a super star
Personally I believe no matter the cooler is water cooling or air cooling, two fans or fanless, it all depends what case you are choosing. For me, I use Sliver stone SG 09 case, which there is AP-180 just right above my HR22, and less than 2mm there is 12 cm exhaust fan right next to the HR 22. when that two are performing, even just low speed, overclocked 4.5 I54670K never pass the 80 degree under prime95 for 24hrs. With one more fan on the back, the temp is right down to 73 on average. 3 fans all full speed, temp is about 62 on average.Pro:Nice performance, probably the best fan-less you can find in the market. Out beat my old HR 02 17C degree in fanless, 11C in low speed, 7C in high speed.Way better compatibility than HR 02 and most of fanless cooler, (a TY140 on the back, fits perfectly with ASUS GRYPHON Z87 with armor kit, Cossair Dominator Mem 4*4, and a back plated GTX780, No touching on any part.)Can go with 150 Fan with out any issues.Better quality than HR02, stand is easy.Better looking (personally view only)Come with CF3 thermal compound.( better than MX4 and AC5, i can assure you)Nice scew driver( it is very handy, for almost everything, I use it to fix door sometimes. Better than whatever walmart 30 dollor piece crap)Con:Overpriced. Too expensive for such small improve, unless you want it to be quite.Still hard to installToo heavy...1.15KG, heavy than my new year dinner.lack of flexibility, the good compatibility only comes when you install in the default way.(But still better than others)The Yellow fancap (or whatever it called) is petty much useless in most of the case. Most disappointed one. NO FAN!!!!Bottom line:Regardless about price. It is a very nice cooler after all. To be honest, the performance is still very impressive. In the real life, how often does the computer use full load? I did test on BF4, COD Ghost and AC4 with GTX780. all max setting, in 1080P for 4hours. CPU temp is about 45-50 degree on average ( 28C lowest, 73C highest) with only back fan in 500rpm speed.Again, It's all depends on the case and personal preference. For my chassis, which full of holes and fans, HR 22 provides a better performance than HR 02 in a quieter conditions. But if you dont care about the noise and want to crazy overclock to 4.8G with full speed, than HR 22 could be a disappointment( with 3 fans only 6C different, I doubt if there is a noticeable different in other cases). If you are looking at performance/price, I think you can close this page for sure.
