Sweet sounds and a sturdy build make an excellent drum.
I have been a drummer for the past 10 years, but have just recently gained an interest in hand percussion. I knew that I wanted a djembe, because of the portability and wide range of sounds they can produce. After searching the internet and reading around I found that Remo's line of djembes would best suit my needs. They are extremely durable, do not require difficult rope tuning (they are key tuned), and sound quite close to traditional djembes. Upon receiving my drum I must admit that I am very pleased. Everything I read about the drum is correct. The earth finish is very nice and has a bit of a texture to it, which I find helpful for holding the drum between my legs. I wanted to get the 14in in order to have a lot of bass, and this drum certainly isn't lacking that. It is quite big, however. The drum is very wide and fairly tall, I probably wouldn't recommend it for smaller users. I am an average sized guy, 6'00'' 150 lbs, and the drum is a good size for me. I am no expert, but the drum sounds very nice. Bass tones are rich and full, and the higher pitched sounds are produced with ease. I am very very happy with this drum, it is a blast to play, and is well worth the $200 I paid for it.

Great Djembe!!
I ordered this a month ago and I'm really enjoying this drum. It sounds good, and although it's not as great sounding as an African made goatskin djembe, I expect the head to last much longer and be much easier to replace. By the way, the replacement head is available on Amazon and costs around $40.00 for the 14" model. The quality seems really good and I expect the body will last a long time. The base sound is pleasantly deep and the rim slap sounds good as well. I'm glad I got the 14" instead of the 12". I think the 12" wouldn't have a deep enough base tone for my preferences. The drum came tuned from the factory and I haven't felt the need to adjust it yet. The synthetic head is made of "Fiberskyn 3". I have another Remo drum for kids that has a head made of the same stuff. My one year old boy beats that thing like crazy and even took a fork to it one day. Hardly any damage resulted. It just had some small pits in the top surface of the head which didn't go through to the bottom. I'm impressed with the durability of the stuff!

Good drum for the right uses.
These drums definitely have a specific niche. If you familiarize yourself with their pros and cons, you're going to be satisfied with them. Otherwise, you're better off spending your money elsewhere. First the pros: These drums are great starter drums and great traveling drums. If you're looking for a drum that can take a lot of abuse and still sound good, these are what you're looking for. Their synthetic heads and composite bodies mean that they can go anywhere under any condition and not suffer for it. They're not affected by humidity, they can be rained on, left in a hot car, used in hot or cold conditions, suffer all sorts of abuse and still keep coming. You won't have to worry about retuning them when the weather changes or worry about reducing head tension when you're not using them. Now the cons: Out of the box, they have a pretty unpleasant echo and high pitched 'ping' sound when you strike them. The synthetic heads don't have the same variations in thickness and imperfections that a natural skin has and this means that they need some work before they sound right. If you do a google search on Remo Djembe you'll find a few websites that talk about ways to use adhesive foam weatherstripping in order to improve their sound. It'll take some time and some fiddling to get them to sound good, but if you make the effort, they can sound just as good as a drum with a natural skin. They come with a generic drum key in order to tighten, loosen or remove the drumhead. Do yourself a favor and buy a torque key when you buy the drum. If you take my advice above, you'll be removing the head a few times in order to improve the sound and a torque key will make it a lot easier to get the head evenly tensioned. If you're looking for a drum for performances or recording, you should probably keep looking. A natural, rope-tuned djembe is a much better choice for a pro. For the amateur, occasional drummer these are a great choice.

Great Djembe
This is a beautiful djembe, has a great sound and is easy to play. I like the fact that I can play it outside without worrying about the head going out of tune. It is expensive, but I think it is worth the purchase. I did not have any problems with the "ringing" sound that some people mention.

16 Inch, Awesome Deep Bass Tones
I was a bit nervous after ordering this that it wouldn't have the deep bass tone I was looking for (the whole reason I chose 16 inch over smaller ones). I watched a few videos from users and the manufacturer and they really didn't do it justice. The bass tones are amazing! They have this nice low boom that sounds like a much bigger drum. The rest of the tones are exactly what you would expect from a djembe. The head is synthetic which is really nice for teaching my kids to play. It can get a little wet/slimy and I can wipe it down without worrying about ruining the head. Overall, a great purchase and, if you are looking for a djembe with awesome bass, this is it!

Quality drum
Love the simplicity of tuning and replacing the head as needed (haven't needed to yet). Love that it isn't finicky with humidity or even a little drizzle. BOOMS when you're harnessing it's bass capability. It DOES sound kind of tinny in some of the higher register slaps and rolls, but this is easily remedied by draping a lighter piece of fabric overtop. I have a few scarves and shawls that serve this purpose and make it easy to dampen the tinny ring without sacrificing the richer tones Plan to enjoy this baby for many years! My only complaint would be if they stop making the replacement heads. I definitely recommend getting a metal drum stand to insert the bottom in. It's big enough to be uncomfortably cumbersome to try holding between your legs
