Calrose, Rice Calrose Extra Fancy, 80 Ounce

READ THIS: I love this rice, it is my absolute favorite, BUT I have had to add BAY leaves to keep the bugs from forming. I use the word "forming" because they are not there at first, but then show up. Does that mean that there are eggs or parasites? Maybe, but I am hoping soaking them well is getting rid of them.

I have purchased this brand ans I'm very pleased with the taste.

Short to medium grain rice, shorter than jasmine rice, not as fragrant; it sticks together better and is good for chopsticks, but not super sticky and doesn’t bleed starch like sushi rices. This is a great dinner rice, pairs well with a wide variety of foods and sauces. This is one of my favorite all around rices. This is factory packed in a plastic bag, sealed well with no leaks. The rice is pearl-white and clean, not at all dusty. Price is good for five pounds of rice; I was pleased to find this here on Amazon, my local supermarkets do not even carry Calrose rice.

This rice is a standout for sushi because of its medium-grain structure—it gets that nice balance of stickiness without being as gluey as short-grain varieties like Japanese sushi rice, though it’s a close cousin. The "Extra Fancy" part isn’t just marketing fluff; it’s the highest quality tier for Calrose under U.S. grading, meaning you’re getting clean, mostly unbroken grains with minimal defects. Milled in California keeps it local and fresh if you’re in the States, and the kosher certification is a bonus for folks who need that assurance.

This was really good rice back in the day when I could afford it. More than doubled in price in the past 2 years.

If you didn't purchase this for sushi but instead as an all-around rice (as I did) be warned that this rice is starchy and needs to be rinsed over and over until the water runs clear. This is not a particularly fast process and even with heavy rinsing this rice has a gummy consistency that isn't very pleasant. It will, however, do in a pinch when it's difficult to find any rice at all during the pandemic. The price is certainly more than reasonable. Cooking it with low sodium chicken or vegetable stock helps. It turns out fine in my rice cooker. Adding some steamed vegetables to it seems to break up the gummy consistency a bit. Will I continue to buy this when rice becomes more readily available? Probably not. Am I glad I'm able to procure it now? Sure. It's not my favorite but it's certainly edible.

Rice is tasty

I have bought this rice twice because Uncle Ben’s, though consistent in size does not hold up when placed at the bottom of the bowl under stews, such as chili or gumbo. It gets too watery for my taste. Calrose rice is better for that application, but it is very sticky if cooked without rinsing it prior to use. If it is cooked without rinsing it, it is perfect for sushi, but, if you are going to substitute it for long grain rice, such as Uncle Ben’s, under stews or gumbo or for Spanish rice, I strongly suggest rinsing it in a bowl of cold water, and changing the cold water until the water stays clear when the rice is stirred. (The ratio is 1.5 cups of rice to two cups of water for Calrose, instead of 2:1, as with other long grain rice, by the way.) You then let the rice sit in the clear water for 20 minutes, and bring it to a boil; reduce the heat and simmer covered for 15 minutes; turn off the heat; and let it sit with the lid on for 10 minutes. Using these preparation and cooking methods the rice turns out firm but fluffy...perfect for pouring stews on top of or adding Spanish rice ingredients into during the cooking process. Note: I happen to use salt in mine, which is not called for in the directions, but, I prefer.

Can’t go wrong with this brand. A little expensive but I have always loved the quality.

The Botan Musenmai Calrose Rice is a very good quality rice. It is very tasty rice that is easy to cook and has a great texture. I use it in all of my rice recipes.
