Expensive, But Well-Performing
I have purchased two sets of the Salt and Pepper Grinder for gifts for my Mother and a very dear and close friend. They both love the sets. The base that holds the salt/pepper is very tight fitting and takes a bit of care to get aligned properly to get connected and seated properly. If the intended recipient is not a detail-oriented person, they may not be able to reassemble the grinder correctly, and may need assistance doing so. The grinders each have a small LED (Light-Emitting Diode) in the base that illuminates the food being salted/peppered quite well. The grinder is operated by light pressure on the center top of the unit. The fineness/coarseness of the salt/pepper can be adjusted by rotating the indicator over an array of dashes from - to -- and --- and finally ----. If all one wants is a small quantity of spice, a quick, light tap on the top is required, otherwise one may find one's food over-seasoned, depending upon how quickly one can press/release the button on the top. The small trays provided to rest the grinders allow one to have the grinders on the table and catch any latent spices that may become dislodged when the grinder is set down, but the dimensions on the tray are so tight that getting the grinder properly situated on the tray requires attention by the operator. To summarize, the salt and pepper grinders/mills are very nice, precision pieces of culinary equipment that are handsomely stylish for the majority of affairs shy of china and silver events. If you are a person who values precision and style, and is tolerant of highly-toleranced devices, you may be very pleased with this purchase. If you are seeking a gift to let a person know how much they are valued, and they have a similar set of values regarding such accessories, this should be on your short list of gift items.

Best idea for the kitchen in a long time.
Best salt and pepper shakers we ever had. Hard to imagine how we ignored this simple item for years. While they are expensive, once you try them and have fresh salt and pepper at the touch if the top, they are cheap at half the price. Update 07/28, 2017. After a little over six months, the light on the pepper shaker quit working. Despite following the instructions on how to fix it, it still does not work. It came with a 2 year warranty, but they say to return it to the seller. That would be Amazon. I am waiting for a response from Amazon on how to deal with this problem/defective item. Update 07/29, 2017 After filing my complaint with Amazon, they in turn referred me to the seller, Cutlery and More. A day later, Teresa F from the store emailed me. Her email indicates that the warranty is with Peugeot, not Cutlery and More. Well, the instructions say the entire product is guaranteed for 2 years, and the motor has a lifetime warranty. The instructions go on to say.... "Return it to the seller" if there is a problem. Despite what the printed instructions say, Teresa says the warranty rests with Peugeot. There are no instructions about contacting Peugeot directly. After several emails back and forth where Teresa makes it sound like this is my fault, she says she will do a one-time courtesy replacement of the pepper mill once I return it. While I can do this, everything seems to be "toned" like this is above and beyond. My suggestion is that if Cutlery and More does not want to simply follow the instructions included with the salt and pepper mills, then they should not be selling that product. They need to have the manufacturer, Peugeot, change the instructions if they are not going to be involved in warranty issues. The light that is defective does not look like it is a consumer replaceable item, thus the need for warranty service. Update 08/08/2017. Once Teresa was out of the picture, Lucresia at Cutlery and More made good on the defective pepper mill. She sent me a prepaid return label and then a new pepper mill. That is how it should have been handled in the first place instead of bantering around and having to get Amazon to intervene.

Should of gotten this one brand....instead of wasted $$on the cheaper one's a long time ago.
So this all started 3yrs ago as a house warming gift from a friend. We all got so used too having battery powered grinders & to tell you the truth using them multiple times a day..there great & verry convenient. The sad fact is there most are made in China & are SUPER CHEAP CRAP!!! Our 1st. Lasted only 6 month's. 2nd set 8 month's. 3rd set 9 month's. This drove me crazy...Is there not 1 company that made a quality unit out there? 99% of the grinders on Amazon are in the $40 range are all made buy the same Chinese company & sold under different names and vendors & quite frankly are crap. So being obsessed in finding a top notch grinders i took a chance on this brand...yes there expensive but at this point I got tired of wasted $$ on crap. Scouring all the reviews on this unit 1 review stuck out & worried me. He stated it was cheaply made & was overpriced. Well he couldn't be more wrong. The quality is outstanding, its super quite, very powerful. The grind adjustment is not your typical screw on the bottom of the mill & is very well thought out. Be aware also that there's a salt & pepper unit's & there NOT interchangeable. The internals mechanism are different. At this this point I feel very confident in my purchase. I'm sure I came across the brand when searching for my 2nd & 3rd set ....& probably said there crazy..$168 for salt & pepper grinders....well now I see the value in a quality set. Buy once...cry once. I purchase these from my money & was not solicited for a review. I hope my review was helpful in your decision.********** UPDATE 3YRS LATER******.....they still get used many times a day & they are srill AMAZING! ...lol. & if my house burnt down tomorrow I would buy these again. They Rock!

Poor reliability - salt mill doesn’t work with sea salt
Great looking kitchen hardware, with a warranty that has a lot of limitations. However, after more than 1 year of owning this set, the salt mill has already malfunctioned (stopped grinding) and had to be replaced once about 4 months after its purchase, and now again, about 12 months later it is again having the same issues. (See some videos below - the grinder is supposed to be turning out salt while its light is on). The pepper mill on the other hand works as advertised and is a dream to use. While the first time the salt mill was replaced with no issues, the second time I was told that sea salt is not supposed to be used with it and that it voids its warranty. This information should be prominently displayed in the product description, given how widespread sea salt use is in home kitchens worldwide.

A well-chosen extravagence
So this was an extravagant purchase, full stop. The kind of purchase you make after coming home late at night from a day of thankless work; which in my case, is exactly what happened. In my defense, I did do the research. I didn't realize the illustrious history Peugeot had with pepper mills. I read the reviews and looked at maybe 2 dozen different models. With each model I kept pointing back at the Peugeot. Something about it attracted me, but, it is expensive. A purchase not for the faint of heart. In the end, I took the plunge. Now after a good month of living with this gadget, I can say that it was a very good purchase. First the important bits. PEPPER: The reasons behind why thousands European sailors braved the Horn of Africa can be easily summed up by the smell of fresh ground pepper. Pepper is a spice that is rarely appreciated until it is freshly ground. This is what the Peugeot Elis does extremely well. There is rarely a concern for the grain size once it is set. Each of the settings work very well, from the fine to the course. One item I like very much is the LED light that shines on the food. It’s not a weak bit of light, rather the contrary. Prepare to receive a surprised expression from guests during candle-lit dinners. Second, the touch switch is perfect; no buttons. Touching the top of the mill will activate the grinding. It is that simple. SALT: Did you know that salt was a currency during Roman times? Some of the richest cities of the empire made lowly salt. I only discovered this fun-fact during a recent trip to Guerande, the Mecca of salt, where I was introduced to “grey” salt. It was these lovely grey salt kernels that broke the old mill. Unlike other manufacturers, Peugeot sells a different mill for the salt. Looking inside at the grinder, you can see a small but distinct different between the two mills. Grey salt is different than kosher or the regular gourmet salts. Those are generally milled to the same size, whereas grey salt will be irregular. Grey salt is completely unrefined, you will see small as well as very large kernels in the same bag. A second difference, grey salt is not very dry. Open a bag. Take a good smell and you will notice remnants of the sea. This seems to be what throws off most mills. Left unattended, a regular salt mill quickly becomes clogged. Peugeot, being French, apparently knows all too well how to handle these complications. After 2 refills, I see no caking of the salt on the grinding mechanism, everything looks clean and neat. In summary, the mills are well engineered with excellent stainless steel finishes. The hard plastic is attractive. The grinding motor easily cuts through the salt and pepper without hesitation without that whining sounds you hear from lesser mills. In an industrial sense, I find that the mills are very elegant. They would go well in a classical as well as a modern setting. In our household there are six of us. So both mills get quite a work out. Thus far both have been work out just fine. I suspect that they will be at the center of our table for many years to come.

Beautiful but pricey
Peugeot grinders are great, I’ve had them for years and they have worked beautifully for me. This has a touch function, which is great for my kids since they can’t manipulate the manual pepper grinder very well. The ease is fantastic, it’s so much fun to use for them. Love having the small clean canister on the bottom to monitor how much pepper/salt you have, as well as the little resting plates for each grinder (so you don’t have salt and pepper all over the table). The price was high, which I had to just suck up. But it’s beautifully and so far has held up wonderfully.

Improved, most efficient, and elegant
I had an earlier version of these and the pepper mill was on its last legs. These were much more expensive but so far seem worth it as they are completely redesigned. If you cook a lot you will find these more than a luxury as the extra efficiency they bring to food preparation is a real plus. For single handed salt or pepper grinding they cannot be beaten. The mechanisms just purr like and expensive sports car. The light is a real plus in many situations as well. These would make a really great gift for a savory cook in that they come in a most elegant box... very well cushioned, attractive, and formidable with a magnetic latch... and thank goodness for that too because the Amazon repackaging of this product offered very little protection at all (I cannot find anywhere to leave packaging feedback as in the past, so here it is Amazon... the repackaging was horrid). UPDATE... I just replaced the ORIGINAL BATTERIES... after over 18 months of daily use!!!!

First rate.
These are very special. Beautiful, and industrial grade compared to cheap ones. However, the assembly instructions are so small you need a magnifying glass, and they're not readily comprehensible - so be careful. Happy we spent the money.
