I have zoned underfloor heating. 4 zones in total. Would it be worth replacing just the thermostat in my lounge with a nest?

We have a similar set-up - zoned underfloor heating downstairs & radiators upstairs. We looked at Nest & Hive but neither system could cope with this many zones. We have just had a Honeywell Evohome system installed. This can handle up to 12 zones, and are very happy with it so far. It even has wireless controlled TRVs available if we find we need them.

My heating runs off a time clock and I have thermostats on every radiator. Is this device of use to me?

Hi, I have a similar set up to you and have just installed Nest. It was a fairly straightforward process (you do need to be competent in DIY, and have an understanding of electrical wiring), and works perfectly for us. The Nest thermostat is located in the hall and switches the central heating on when the temperature falls below that set on the Nest unit - you can control the temperature in individual rooms using the radiator thermostats as previously. This is a UK installation and allows control of the hot water heating too. Hope that helps.

Can it be controlled from 2 or more phones? I don’t want something that eg turns off because my husband has left the house, but I’m still at home.

Yes it can be controlled by both your phones, it won't turn off when your husband leaves the house if it still senses movement in house. It learns when people are regularly in or out.

Where should I put my thermostat

You should put the thermostat in a room that is not excessively affected by heat gains from other sources e.g hot appliances or the sun shining through windows. Traditionally is would go in a hallway as that gets cooler with opening of doors etc. Additionally, the room where the thermostat is located should not have a TRV fitted else it should be set to maximum ( and locking covers are available to stop people tampering) in order to prevent instability in control. TRV’s are there to prevent overheating in rooms where solar gain is present e.g. south facing rooms or where other heat gains may be present. I’m not a supporter of electronic TRV’s like the TADO as they can only control rooms independently if the interconnecting doors are closed and draught proofed, quite unlikely. Otherwise you will have draught sand feel colder. Better to have a properly located main thermostat controlling the boiler and TRV’s on rooms that may overheat.
