Lonely Planet Iceland 11 (Travel Guide) Paperback – Folded Map, May 21, 2019

Lonely Planet books are my bread and butter for traveling around the world, detailed info, suggested itineraries, history and culture briefings, language tips, etc. No other books can beat Lonely Planet.

Bought this for a recent trip and it was very helpful. Between myself and others on the trip we had several guide books. Lonely Planet never steered us wrong, and we were frequently glad we had it with us. I'll definitely get another Lonely Planet guide for my next trip.P.S. Go to Iceland. It is amazing!

I planned a week-long trip to Iceland based on this book and on some Internet searches. I did not have previous experience with this country and this was an excellent resource. Regarding hotels, I mostly booked based on Internet searches because of availability. That being said, I did check with this book to see if there were any comments made about accommodations.The book is fairly well organized, with each section of the country split out. It would have been nice if the guide maps at the beginning of each section overlapped a bit. I liked that highlights of each part of the country were included on the map page. With so many different things to see, it made it easier not to "miss" something good. Because we went clockwise around the Ring Road, I kept having to jump around the book but this is pretty unavoidable. I would not use the maps to navigate (I used the NG road map). The road quality varied greatly so be sure to consult another resource(Google maps, road maps, online Iceland websites with road conditions) before planning a driving trip.I thought the photos could have been much better; I did not find them to be particularly useful and didn't feel the quality was very good. This did not matter much.On the whole, most of the information was up-to-date and accurate. I did use the index quite a bit and found that to be extremely important. This is a fine reference book, lightweight and easy to use.

I really enjoyed it! I didn't use any of the restaurant recommendations, but used it for just planning the general direction of my trip and all the sights that were must sees for me! No regrets with this book for sure.

Quickly becoming a fan of Lonely Planet. Their maps, photos, and descriptions are perfect. Great reference for a vacation to Iceland.

Great book with tons of info. Printed in 2019 so as of now the information is pretty up to date.

2020 mussten wir unsere Hochzeitsreise in den USA im letzten Moment (einen Monat vorher) absagen und so entschieden wir uns für Island. Normalerweise lieben wir es, einen Urlaub monatelang zu planen, nun musste alles schnell gehen. Die kompakten Infos in diesem Lonely Planet waren also noch wertvoller als sonst!Wir orientierten uns an der RingRoad und an den Highlights der Übersichtskarte auf Seite 6. So stand innerhalb kürzester Zeit ein Reiseplan. Für die Hotelbuchungen benutzten wir den LP allerdings nicht. Der LP kam dann vor Ort wieder zum Einsatz: Für Sehenswürdigkeiten und Restaurantempfehlungen.Ich müsste dem LP schon allein deswegen 5 Sterne geben, weil er der Fimmvorduhals-Wanderung eine ganze Doppelseite widmet. Nur so wurden wir auf diese Wanderung aufmerksam, und sie war die schönste Wanderung, die ich bisher jemals gemacht habe. (Übrigens zeigt sich hier aber auch gleichzeitig eine Schwäche des LP: Durch die Kompaktheit gehen teilweise die Hintergrundinformationen verloren. Wie man vom Zielort der Wanderung dann wieder an den Start kommt, mussten wir uns mühsam über Reiseforen zusammensuchen).Auch die Wanderung auf Hornstrandir machten wir dank der einladenden Beschreibung im Lonely Planet, auch hier wurden wir nicht enttäuscht - und auch hier mussten wir uns das "wie kommen wir dahin" selbst zusammensuchen.Auf Vestmannaeyjar war der LP besonders wichtig, denn hier hatten wir viel freie Zeit bis zur nächsten Fähre. Das Eldheimar-Museum hätten wir ohne den Tipp im LP nie besucht, ebensowenig wären wir bei Bogarfjördur Eystri gewandert. Auch eines der besten Abendessen unserer Reise, im Rub23 in Akureyri, geht aufs Konto vom LP.Kurz gesagt: Die LP Reiseführer sind immer hilfreich und gut recherchiert. Perfekt zur Reisevorbereitung, aber auch vor Ort.
