Can I turn them on/off just by switching the 5v power source on/off? Do I have t use the remote?

You can turn the off and on via the remote, or the switch on the back.

Ultimately i'd like to use this activated only when my bird screams - not during casual conversation or quiet tv. would this activated at low levels?
