Bought it for the incredible film, A Patch of Blue, but liked the others as well!
I purchased this collection in order to get A Patch of Blue which I was dying to see because of the rave reviews it gets on Amazon and because it was cheaper to buy four movies than it was to just buy A Patch of Blue. This film is simply incredible. I was not disappointed. The two main characters are so good and likable. I cared about them right from the beginning and it was a joy to watch them get to know one another. They were both so gentle with each other. The dialogue was great. I loved that their relationship was not overly “romancey”. I loved everything about this film. It was just perfect in every way for me. The score was also wonderful and really enhanced the story. There were only a few very mild profanities when Selina's mother and grandpa were arguing, but no GD's. And there was nothing sexual in the film except for the mother's “profession” which is only hinted at. I've seen a lot of movies and this is one of the very best I've ever seen.Edge of the City is a decent movie with the John Cassevetes character having to make a tough moral decision. He and Sidney's character become good friends and that was nice to see. It had some good moments, however, the movie felt rushed. Also, I thought there could have been more resolution in the end. Still, I enjoyed it. Blackboard Jungle was a surprisingly raw film for 1955. Although it would now be considered old-fashioned in its attitudes by many people it was still a decent movie for me and I enjoyed it.Something of Value is an interesting and gritty film about colonial Kenya in the 40's and 50's. Hudson and Poitier did a fine job. They were very believable in their respective roles. I liked that it showed me something I never knew about before and it did so through a friendship. All four films are in black and white and there are subtitles for each film. This is a great buy!

A good deal.
These movies were good, as they're all classics. However, I was a bit disappointed in myself that I didn't read the 'specs' and note that they all were in B&W. I should have known. I don't know if I would have purchased this collection otherwise. I particularly wanted "Blackboard Jungle", so I guess, for the price, I didn't lose. The 4-star rating is only because they were in Black and White.

What a great collection of Sidney Poitier's films
What a great collection of Sidney Poitier's films. My favorite was Blackboard Jungle. I had seen A Patch of Blue, but this was the first time I had seen Edge of the City and Something of Value. What a fine actor Mr Poitier is, one of my favorites. After purchasing In the Heat of the Night, I decided to add more of his films to my collection, including his film debut, No Way Out, and his Oscar winner, Lilies of the Field.

Somethings Are Of Value And Some Are Not
A Young Sidney Poiter & 4 Great Movies:1. 'A Patch Of Blue' starring Sidney Poiter & Shelly WintersIn 1960s America, amongst racism & other prejudices a relationship develops between a Blind & inherently 'trashy' Teenage White Girl who doesn't even know the correct pronunciation of her own name, until a 'caring' & kind Black - Oops! I mean 'coloured' man - (Poiter) - comes along. This is my favourite of the 4 because it has that feel good/ factor or a justice is served that you just wished they made a sequel.Directed by Guy Green.2. 'Blackboard Jungle' starring Sidney Poiter & Glenn FordPoiter's prequel to To Sir With Love. In this movie Poiter is the student.Directed by Richard Brooks - set in 1960s America with all it's racial slurs & prejudices, , this movie not only makes a political statement about the 'School Teacher's Pay & Rights' as a Teacher, but it raises it's concerns about 'education', educating the uneducated, the social issues within the school and the community issues outside of school for both the student & the teacher, in an 'Inner City' run 'State School' or 'High School'. There is also a case in point 'In Favour Of Age Discrimination' and the employment female teachers in such schools.3. 'Edge Of The City' - Sidney Poiter & John CassavetesDirected By Martin RittThis movie is all about our day-to-day relationships at home and at work. This is the movie that set me on this Sidney Poiter trail blaze. My favourite all time greatest movie ever is the 1968 Rosemary's Baby which stars John Cassavetes as Guy Woodhouse. The 2014 version of Rosemary's Baby is equally as riveting - (to me).I wanted to follow other Cassavetes movies and this came up in the listing, so I started here. However, in 2017 I Am no longer on the Cassavetes trail blaze, but both versions of Rosemary's Baby are the movies I would never tire of watching over & over again.4. 'Something Of Value' starring Sidney Poiter & Rock HudsonDirected By Guy GreenRetitled 'Africa Ablaze' - which I guess is to forewarn you that the film contents might have an element of political extremism or violence - this film made in the 1950s - which I assume is set in 1950s Africa, is representative of the internal affairs of African warfare - i.e. colonialism versus traditionalist Africa versus 'left-wing' Africans.Alphabetically this film appears last on the list, but this is also my least favourite of the 4 films, because there's 'Nothing Of Value' in warfare. 'Nothing Of Value' can be learned from generating, stirring up the emotions of or by tugging at the hearts strings of Africans, Afrikaans, or the 'Roots' Of Africa.Lest we forget that this is just a film, I'd say say its an excellent movie that highlights & reminds us all, there are conclusively 'No Winners' of war - whatever your personal, political and/or private effects, status and views.Thank You!

Anyone in UK/Europe looking at this should know that (despite the Amazon details and the info on the set's box) the only disc not playable on a UK (region 2) DVD player is 'a Patch of Blue', all of the other films are coded as region free. The transfers are all very clean and each film has its own disc. A Bargain when you look at the prices of individual films.
