Lasted a year
These lasted about 8 months before falling apart as every day walking shoes. I still wear them after a year and 2 months but now have to buy new ones as these are no longer water resistant and my feet get wet in the AM whicle tending my gardens. Vibram tred practically looks like new which is the main reason I got these, but tred doesn't matter if shoe falls apart. Rest of the shoe is cheap. For $175 these should have lasted more then a year before falling apart from normal use. I remember when Merrell shoes would last 5 years for me and that was when I was back packing across the country for 2 years on and off the streets. A shame that companies have resorted to cheap China materials to save a buck which is why I took a star off. These are probably still the best hiking shoes around as all the rest seem to fall apart even faster. Cheap shoe glue seems to be the main culprit.

Good Boots for Moderate Hiking
I have just bought the Merrell's Moab 2 Mid GTX. My review is for an almost identical pair of boots I bought two years ago. One important difference between the new and the old Moabs is that these new Moabs are Gorotex. The old ones were "waterproof". Like with most of the boots available for hiking (like those you may find at REI), the construction and materials used in the Moabs are not of great quality. If you hike a lot, these boots start desintegrating within 1 to 2 years of use. Within one year, the waterproofness of the "waterproof" Moabs diasppeared. Within two years, the Vibram sole has worn out in the front, the boot becoming slippery on rocks. After two years, the rubber tow and the heels are starting to separate and the front fabric is cracked. It is up to you to decide whether this is a long-lasting boot or a short-lasting boot; it depends on how much hiking you do and where. In my experience, the Moabs 2, like the Salomon, Lowa Renegade, and Oboz I have tried before, are adequate boots for trail hiking, but not much else. None of these boots last as hiking boots should, but at least the Moabs are quite comfortable on my feet right out of the box, and the soles have not fallen apart like they did in the Salomon, neither have I experienced problems with the lace hooks as I did with the Oboz. Generally, none of these boots are adequate for aggressive hiking or montaneering (White Mountains Presidentials, High Rockies, High Cascades). For that I have an excellent pair of Zamberlan. One other thing to be aware: the Moab 2 Mid GTX have imitation leather, which may not last; the old Moabs had real leather uppers. On the other hand, I am expecting the Gorotex in my new Moab 2 Mid GTX to be more breathdable and last longer than the "waterproof" film of my old, regular Moabs. Overall, a good pair of boots if your hiking is not too agressive, but they are unlikely to last.

MOAB 2 GTX are waterproof Non GTX not so much
I have seen a lot of reviews of people saying the MOAB 2 boots are not waterproof. The GTX MOAB 2's have a Gore-Tex membrane sewn into the boot. They are waterproof up to about mid foot before water will seep inside. In other words don't step in deep puddles are deep streams. Non GTX MOAB's are not waterproof. Even if they claim to be. Gore-Tex IMO is the true measure of waterproofness.I have 3 pairs of these boots sitting here next to me. Two I have worn the Vibram sole down smooth the other is brand new. All 3 are the GTX model. The two worn boots I have wore the sole out before the boot. With Merrell you get what you pay for. I would not expect these boots to survive a through hike of the AT. People seem to think these boots are a heavy work boots. They are not. We are talking a mass produced boot that is under $200 bucks. There not even real leather. However as a walker or a moderate hiking boot they get the job done.Take mine for instance, I use mine as a daily work boot in a moderately strenuous work environment. My days at work are spent on an asphalt/concrete lot where I do a lot of walking in all kinds of Florida weather. Hot days with a lot of rain in the Summer and Cool days in the winter. These boots are comfortable right out of the box. No break in required. They let your feet breathe and keep them dry when it rains, but they don't last very long. I can get about a 14 to 18 months out of them before the sole is worn down. This is just how the boot is made.Don't expect a rugged hiking boot that will last you years and years. The reason people keep coming back to Merrell, myself included is the comfort that you get right out of the box. Just like I said these boots need no break in period. Use them, wear them out, they buy another. Just like tennis shoes or running shoes.Bottom line is Merrell MOAB's look cool, they look really good with jeans or shorts. The GTX version will keep your feet dry. The Vibram sole is grippy and knobby enough for hiking with light to moderate loads. There comfortable enough to wear all day while working. As I said you get what you pay for.I love mine.

Best bang for the buck!
I’ve tried a lot of different brands but I keep coming back to this one because of the price, durability, fit, comfort and performance.

I like a wide boot so I ordered in Wide, which is perfect for my foot.
Original product shipped was wrong size but the correct one was shipped out the same day I found the wrong one arrived. Great turn around and I like the boots.

Great fit for a great shoe
Durably made, nicely-designed, perfectly-fitting, comfortable high-top sneaker/boot, great for not only hiking but everyday use. You'll pay a bit more for these than some others, but it's worth it. Also, for those of us who are vegetarian or vegan or simply concerned about the exploitation and torture of animals, there is no leather used in these, and yet they are as tough and attractive as leather hiking boots.

Good all-round mid boot with caveats
Good all-round boot. I've now done quite a few multi-day walks (15-25 miles per day), in different weather conditions and in different terrains, and I don't think you'll do any better at this price point if you're looking for a decent pair of synthetic material boots but there are some niggles, so I'll start with the relative 'cons':1. Only the last/top lace fixing is a metal hoop - I always tighten the boot, with heel to the very back, on the second to top fixing so that the foot is held firmly in place (particularly important when walking down hills/mountains). Obviously I can still do this but I'm not sure how much longevity the material hoop will have. Also, I have benefitted in the past from re-passing the laces through the second to last fixing, after the top fixing, before the final tie to add further stability. This isn't really practically possible with these boots.2. It may have something to do with the US size conversion but, as others have said, the sizes are much smaller than stated - YOU NEED TO ORDER AT LEAST ONE SIZE LARGER THAN YOUR CASUAL SHOE SIZE - in fact, taking foot swell and the 'thumb length space' rule into account you may even need a size and a half larger. I'm a standard 10 for casual and 10.5 for sports/running and the 11 in these boots is just about OK even with thin socks. The 'pros':1. They are waterproof - I've spent many hours in wet conditions where the boot has been constantly exposed and my feet have always remained completely dry.2. Very comfortable / wide fit - probably the most comfortable boot I've worn. I've always been surprised by how few walking boot makers make 'wide-fit' boots - my feet aren't that wide but I have to completely rule quite a number of boot makers (i.e. their entire range!) because they stick to a specific foot template which will rub and cause me blisters, especially at the toes. Why? I'm not an expert but who has feet that get narrower towards the toes?3. Good grip - these are vibram soles which have some reputation for being useless/dangerous on wet rock; I have found that this isn't the case with these. The sole is also a very good compromise/mid-point between flexible (for general 'flat' walks) and inflexbile (rough surface/mountain walks).I hope this helps.

MOAB: MOTHER OF ALL BOOTS (Madre De Todas Las Botas)

Perfect for extremes in cold and wet
Like me I’m sure your doing lots of research for a new shoe so here’s my experience of this pair.I bought these with the aim of hiking up snowdon, I’m yet to go but so far my experience has given me complete confidence.Fit: I have a wide foot and usally wear a uk7.5. Ordered an 8 as I wear with thick hiking socks and fits fine. Toe box is spacious and there is very good arch support. The heal is cupped well and does not lift, even in mud.Waterproof: yes. Absolutely. Can not fault the goretex lining. The true test for waterproof shoes is walking acros a Dewey field or in long grass after rain. The uppers did not allow any moisture in over several hours.Performance: I took these on a trip to Iceland where I was out in minus 10 for several hours in snow and ice. Did not get cold toes once in standard hiking socks. I also found the vibram sole grippy in the ice and stable in snow.Verdict: I have no doubt these will last ages and I’m completely confident taking them up snowdon.Hope this is useful

My 1st review was a 5 Star one but not now!!
Well after initially extolling the virtues of these boot in my first review I’ve been forced to amend it :(Ordered these boots in May this year and now the uppers are falling apart and both boots leak, soles show very little wear though. I’ve only used them for walking my dog. Expensive mistake, any chance of a refund after 5months of wear?

Get your wallet out!.
This is my 4th pair of the above boots. The positives are that they are fantastically light @ 1148g per pair. They are water proof for only about 6 months however, The Goretex membrane obviously breaks down in the sandwich. I have never been able to reproof boots with spraying, They will withstand a shower or two but walking through wet grass kills the proofing dead. To offset this problem I simply buy new ones for serious walking and wear the still useful old ones for leisure use.The bottoms although bog standard Vibram, On these boots they seem to last far longer than any other I have ever worn. I wear the boots every single day, Town & Country, Despite the problem of the proofing lessoning over time, I would never wear any other boot but these. I am 66yrs old, I spend my money wisely!.
