The .5 is IPT and you need an adapter fitting to use it with a drop El for a hand held shower.
It could have been better explained that the thread was 1/2" IPT. I had to search out an additional adapter fitting to get my new hand held to operate.

Disgusted with buying junk that doesn't work on Amazon
2 of 3 leaked, though they were very tight and I was using teflon pipe dope. Defective threads. Spent lots of time having to remove them and replace with Uponor pex - no leaks, of course. Disgusted with buying junk that doesn't work on Amazon.
