Sadness, loss....betrayal.
Read this after the hype if the West End and Broadway shows starring Tom Hiddleston. A great read, you can feel the anger and hurt in the lines of the play and also the loss for each character. I didn't find that I warmed to any of the characters but really felt for each of them also. I'd definitely read it again.

Underwhelmed
Saw this play on stage and was underwhelmed because there is no climax, rather it fizzles out like a damp squid. Reading the play is marginally better but the characters are non-descript and the dialogue is dated - I counted 22 'What?' questions and that's without the endless 'What do you mean?' What happened?' What for?' and so on. Harold Pinter appears to wear the emperor's clothes. Criticise him at your peril. Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa

It begins at the end...
Okay, so as the name suggests, this is a play about betrayal. It starts with two ex-lovers having a conversation in a pub, where we find out that the man had an ongoing affair with the woman, who was and is his best friend's wife. As the story goes on, we find out there's more betrayal going on than just the affair and before you wonder what's going on, the play begins at the end of the story and works backwards, so pay attention to the dates that each chapter relates to. Not a book or author I'd heard of, but it was part of my university reading list and I enjoyed reading it. I thought it was very clever the way the story was told, starting when the affair was already over, then taking us back through time and exploring the intertwining relationships. It uncovered the story in a whole new way and for all you writers out there, there's loads of sub-text. I didn't like the way the play ended though, as it left me thinking, "What was point of all that?", but it was a good read. There was a film made based closely on the play, starring Jeremy Irons, Patricia Hodgson and Ben Kingsley. Again, I thought it was really good, but wasn't sure what to make of the ending.

Easy read whereby allows you to come to your own conclusions about the lives of 3 'friends'.
After only 1.5 hours reading, I have just finished reading Harold Pinter's Betrayal. It is like no other book I have read, perhaps because Pinter was a playwright and screenwriter. As I read I imagined sat watching a short film or theatre production. With each line spoken it left the story of each character open to interpretation. The story isn't just about 3 friends, 2 best friends, a husband and wife, and man and women having an affair.Throughout the whole story you can draw your own conclusions as to how each character felt through the different stages of the relationship(s). You can have have your own opinion as to facial expressions and tones of voices. This read goes from present day and works backwards. Many readers have noted that they found the ending to be an anti-climax, but I found that the ending opened up another page of questions for me. Again, allowing me to make my own judgements from what I had just and already read.

Great book, Pinter uses reverse chronology in structuring the plot, for example, the first scene takes place after the affair has ended and the final scene ends when the affair begins. Reading plays, especially Pinter's, makes a refreshing change from reading novels, especially as one of Pinter's main themes in his writing is infidelity, intimacy, and the magnetic line of connection between two bodies and their secret selves.

EXCELLENT
Mint condition - such a GREAT PLAY! Interesting from various angles. Pinter is a genius. Quite short in terms of the dialogue but so much more is going on. Its all about relationship and it can be worked on so many different ways as an actor once you get to the heart of your characters. Very beautifully and intelligently written. Definitely recommend. Short read too! Oh and came in great condition
