Solid handbook on assessment
This book covers all the fundamentals of program assessment, including philosophy, strategies, and all the possibilities and pitfalls when trying to close the program improvement cycle on college campuses. Recommended for any college faculty member, department or division chair, or administrator who wants an economical outline of what to do to put in place and document efforts to assess and/or improve program outcomes. Purchase a copy for your assessment folks, or for faculty who will lead in this important aspect of program improvement, or for accreditation reporting. Top quality manual.

Helpful
I bought this book because our institution is working through it's IE documents and processes. If you don't know what "IE" stands for, count yourself fortunate to be outside the process! The book is helpful in that it provides a basic structure for understanding assessment, and encourages those planning assessment to build in consistency throughout the structure. This book is a solid primer for those entering the IE world.

Haven't dug into it yet...
I haven't had the time to really dig through the book yet, due to the holidays, but I am looking forward to doing so soon. When I have, I will post another review.

Timely Topic, Useful Overview
This is a somewhat dated discussion of a crucial contemporary issue, the evaluation of higher education programs. Although somewhat dated, this source will provide a guide for assessing the efficacy of academic programs. I used it as an academic dean overseeing several humanities programs and found it useful.

An important discussion of best practices
My university is introducing the practice of assessment of program outcomes and this work provides an in depth discussion of why and how to assess programs. Over the coming decade all institutes of higher education will be implementing the approaches outline here. It is important that we get it right.
