Great train, but shipping ruins surprise
My kids and I love this train. It runs without a hitch and has a nice variety of color. We added a Christmas-themed car to make it even more fun under the tree. Then only difficulty is assembling the tracks, which, as many other reviewers have noted, is rather challenging. The tracks don't connect smoothly—it takes quite a bit of strength and force to join them.My biggest complaint has to do with the shipping by this particular seller. The item is shipped without an outer box, which entirely ruined the surprise for my kids, as they saw the package in front of our door when they came home from school. This is also an invitation for someone to steal the set, since they can readily see what it is. I was super disappointed by this.

New Haven RS-3 Set Runs on a Traditional 1950s Layout
This New Haven LionChief RS-3 set is excellent -- a great combination of quality, detail, features, and value. It runs nicely with the power supply and modest oval of track included, but I bought it to run on my traditional postwar layout from the 1950s. It is really amazing how compatible it is with the 65-year-old equipment. The cars are interchangeable, the locomotive navigates the tight 027 gauge curves (note that some LionChief models do not), all the old accessories work including the operating cars, and control via the Bluetooth app or remote is fully functional on the old layout. (I did have a few issues with the 1122 switches).Quality and detail on the Alco RS-3 engine cannot match the best of the early 1950s models such as the #2343 Santa Fe F3 or the #2245 Texas Special, but it compares very favorably with the more moderately priced engines of the late 50s like the #627 GE 44-tonner, and far exceeds many of the feature-starved Lionel diesels of the 1960s. Of course the LionChief has modern features never imagined in the old days, like realistic Railsounds and the electronic operation via Bluetooth. The detailed figures in the lighted cab and the directional headlights are especially nice touches. I would recommend buying an additional boxcar to fill out the train -- the handsome #6-19218 New Haven from 1990 for instance, available like new on EBay for $15-20 plus shipping. It matches the set perfectly and looks great behind the NHRR RS-3 (see photo). The key to running LionChief equipment on an old layout is to park your old trains on sidings and set the conventional transformer at a constant voltage (18 volts in the case of my model LW from 1955 or the maximum 16 volts on a model 1033, for instance). Then power up the track where the new train is located, launch the LionChief app or switch on the remote, and you are ready to roll. For a demonstration, see my YouTube video at https://youtu.be/f_a6zD94fQUAnother possibility would be to connect an isolated track loop to appropriate fixed voltage terminals on the transformer (B and A on the model LW). Then you could run the LionChief there while operating traditional equipment on a separate track loop at the same time. A third option is to purchase a LionChief Plus locomotive which is capable of running either with fixed voltage remote control or conventional variable voltage transformer control (includes many other nice features too like smoke and remote couplers, but much more costly). All in all I would say I am highly enthusiastic about this set and consider it very good value for the price that I paid ($220).

A Reminder Of My Time In Conneticut
Yes, the New Haven Railroad was gone by the time I arrived in New London, CT, but that doesn't matter. When I run this train set, it reminds me of my times that I was stationed at Groton, CT with the US Navy and when I was right across the Thames River in New London, Ct with the US Coast Guard. It's a fully functional Lionel Train Set that does everything that was advertised. this makes my 4th Lionel Alco RS3, but it also makes wonderful starter set.

"It's a real train."
The train is everything I thought it would be. It was a gift for my two great grandsons. When they opened the box their exact words were, "It's a real train!" They are moving to a new house and will have a whole room to make a train layout. The engine is an exact replica and so are all the other cars. I will be adding to this set as time goes on. I could not have bought a better gift for them.

Awesome train set
The media could not be loaded. It’s a great train set at a decent price. My 4 yr old boy loves his new big boy train! Not gonna lie, mom likes it too.The rail road crossing signal was bought separately and was an awesome addition to the set.
