Teach Yourself Turkish Conversation (TYCN)

For anyone wanting to learn enough Turkish to impress (and get special treatment) as a tourist, this is superb. Having said that, it doesn't really stand alone if you want to really get to grips with the structure of the language; for that you'd also need the traditional "Teach Yourself Turkish" as well as this.However, as anyone who's trying to learn the language will know, the main difficulty is not so much constructing a simple sentence to say, it's understanding the ANSWER that's the real problem, given the wholly alien word order and the plethora of ever-lengthening word endings.This is where this item scores highly. The conversations are pretty much exclusively geared to areas of conversation which you might engage in on holiday, and the spoken Turkish starts off slowly before building up to a natural speed. The fairly small booklet contains a surprising amount of information, and most of the necessary explanations are given in the CD tracks between the conversations.All in all, a very versatile package which can either be used by itself, or as a most useful corollary to more detailed studies.
