Can this be used on a patio over the firepit?

I believe this would fit over most backyard fire pits. I use it camping over a pretty large fire ring and the legs go out wide enough to for that, so I'd say you're good.

Why does my packaging say chromed steel for the grill plate?

How much weight can this hold safely? I'm wondering if it would be sturdy enough to hang a 6qt cast metal Dutch oven.

Hi, the weight capacity will be determined by the ground this is set up on. Soft dirt or grass will be ideal for heavier weights. We would recommend not using this tripod for cast iron cookware. We do carry a Heavy-Duty 3 Legged Campfire Tripod #15997. This tripod is recommended for Dutch ovens.
