Door Closer Keeps Cats Out Of Laundry Room
The photo shows that the Prime-Line Astra KC10HD Safety Spring Door Closer can be mounted on the door case molding (which isn't flat) using the four screws that come with the product. FYI, it is straddling a concave portion of the molding. When the tension was adjusted strong enough to fully close the door the mechanism sort of growls when you open and close the door, I think because the springs are wound up so tightly the surfaces are rubbing together. However, when enough tension was applied it did shut the door very smoothly until it actually latched. Also, I found that I had to use an Allen wrench to hold the output disk in place so I could screw in the arm in the correct hole. The short threaded rod they give you doesn't help much in some cases where it won't fit between the closer and the adjacent wall. All in all I'm very happy with the product. About drilling the holes: When drilling the holes, it helps if you first use a drill that just barley fits inside the four through-hole mounting hole locations in the closer to mark one location and create a "center" point for the smaller bit that will be used for the screw pilot holes. Hold the mechanism in the place you want to mount it and then insert this larger drill bit into one of the top mounting holes. Only drill a slight divot in the surface of the molding to create a center for the smaller bit you'll use next. Don't drill all the way through the molding with this larger bit or you'll screw up big time! Now remove that first larger bit from the drill, blow out the saw dust, and insert a drill with the inner screw shank diameter through the mechanism so the actual pilot hole for the screw can be drilled all the way through the molding with the mechanism in place, that way it will be at the correct angle. I think the bit I used for this was about 3/32 inch. Don't make the screw pilot bit too small or you'll crack your molding when you install the screws. Once this is done, you can install one of the top mounting bolts and tighten the closer up against the molding. Now you can finish drilling the other three larger holes with very little hassle to help guide the smaller pilot drill bit when you drill the remaining three pilot holes.

Like it a lot. Gentle and easy
I am very happy with this door closer. I got this because my kids are always leaving my back door open. Instead of getting extremely angry with them I decided to buy this. I had originally bought one of those commercial door closers with the arm. The problem is, it was too strong for my kids. The smaller ones couldn't get out and definitely couldn't get back in. My wife also didn't like using that much effort to open the door. This product is very gentle in closing the door. I mean, it can be adjusted to push the door harder or less hard, but it will never make it unpleasant to open. In fact, if there was some wind blowing against it, I don't think it would successfully close the door at all. But to just avoid kids absentmindedly leaving the door open, this is perfect. Installation was crazy easy and it looks like it will work with just about any door and frame you can come up with. The internal spring does make a little creaking sound, but it isn't enough to bother us. Other reviewers have oiled it and made it silent, but we kind of like having a quiet signal that someone has opened the door. I like this product enough that I have purchased a second one for my front door. This is the right door closer for light residential doors.

A cheap solution to a frustrating problem
Our dogs are confined to the hardwood floors downstairs. They get back at us by peeing on the rugs in the guest bathroom down there. The rugs were never down there anymore because they were always in the wash. I tried to "encourage" my wife enough to close the door whenever she used it but that was a losing battle as well, so I figured I'd give this a try. I didn't really realize such things existed. It's not the best looking piece of hardware so I wouldn't suggest putting it on your front door in the entry way or something, but this is hidden on the inside of a bathroom for us so it's not seen unless you're in there. We have decorative, uneven crown molding around our interior doors. The steel bar wouldn't have been long enough to reach the door had I mounted it on the wall. Plus I would have had to extended it from the wall and the "glide" from the door to make them match up depth wise. So I had to drill 4 decent sized holes into the molding which I didn't especially enjoy. But it's not a huge problem. It certainly works well. I had to use pretty much all my strength to get it to a setting that would actually close it all the way. As such, It makes a "tension noise" when you're opening it. It's not hard to open or anything, but you may notice it feels a little heavier. It still doesn't really "slam" or anything. It shuts relatively nice and gently and eases into a completely closed position from almost any distance. All in all I'm pretty happy with this. Especially for 10 bucks. And especially since it solved a problem with very little effort on my part. You may want to go a different route if your application would have high visibility. or if you're worried about putting holes into your door frame. otherwise you'll be happy with it.

Love it
I think it works really well. Especially for the price I just bought my 4th one. One of them make a noise. Since I read some people complain about it. Watch your fingers when putting tension to it but once it’s installed your golden

Beware of Plastic Slider
This closer is super easy to install and for the most part is very robust. However, the plastic slider (the only plastic piece) is not. When I was rotating the arm to install the caps, the arm slipped, hit the plastic and severely cracked it. I had the tension just enough to close a simple PVC screen porch door. The guide says to put the end of the arm outside the head of the screw, but I think this is a mistake. If you install the end of the arm over the head of the screw, then if the arm ever slaps back it will hit the screw, not the plastic. I asked for a replacement part, but I doubt they have one. A more durable slider would have created a perfect product, this five stars. But without it, it’ll get 3 stars—which in my book is a still a good product, just incomplete on the quality as a whole. Also, I wish they included more plugs and screw covers. The have plugs for the tension holes, but non of the others. Since I’m using mine for an outdoor porch door, it would be nice to not have water puddling, but even if indoors, it would be more aesthetically pleasing if all were plugged and covered.

Make sure to pack internal springs with grease.
This is an excellent door closer, we use it on the garage door that leads into the house and it gets used 250 times a day. The one thing you should do is open it up with the one screw on the bottom of the closer and carefully pull the assembly apart and pack the springs each with grease. This eliminates the creaking noise that happens if you leave it as is. Other than that 100% recommend and the first one I purchased has lasted many years so far.

Spring makes loud noise
I ordered this item several years back and it was great. Ordered it for another door and the spring made a very loud noise when I would open and close the door so I exchanged it for another of the same and it had the same issue. This door is a little heavier than the first door but not very heavy. Tried to chat with tech support and missed the return window by 3 days.

Very well made, springs are not old, rusty or cheap (see photo)
Thought I'd write a review on this, and address an issue I see people talking about. Pros: Much smaller than expected Well constructed, no plastic in mechanism (two small exceptions, the plugs you put in after adjusting that are purely cosmetic, and the slider that attaches to the door, which I prefer plastic) Easy to mount (fits very well on the door jam itself) Powerful Nice long screws come with it which are important because there's going to be a bit of tension on it and it needs a firm grab. Cons I don't like drilling into the door jam, but this is a permanent addition so it's not that bad. That's all the cons I can think of, other than the annoyance that the set screw that holds the unit together wasn't 100% tight but i took it off anyway to look at the springs. Now, to address something I've seen posted below. Either some people got very old units, they're mistaken, or the company listened to the reviews and made changes. But there is no rust whatsoever in the springs. They are brand new, and make no noise at all. As preventive maintenance i did spray mine with a tiny bit of lithium grease, but I don't anticipate any trouble. This is a well made product and I'm sure it'll hold up for many years.

Not a Soft Close Door Closer
I bought this door closer expecting a smooth, soft-closing action, but it was very disappointing. Despite adjusting it, the door closes too abruptly and doesn't provide the soft close I was looking for. The spring mechanism feels harsh, making it noisy and unpleasant to use. If you're specifically after a soft-closing door closer, I would not recommend this product. It may work as a basic self-closing mechanism, but it certainly doesn't deliver a smooth or gentle closing experience.

Very Noisy
This door closer appears to be somewhat coarse. The paintwork in the screw holes were coming off even though it was new (see picture). The threads for the closing arms also had some paint stripped off. As the closer is of metal construction paint may, depending on the finishing process used, come off quite easily. It was easy enough to fasten, but I was missing one plastic plug for the retaining screws (see picture) Finally, this closer is very noisy. When closing or opening the door, it emits a loud creaking noise. Measured with my phone, the noise levels in the room rose from 40+dB to 60+dB. (video attached). If you are looking to close a door inside your home, I would give this a miss. The common overhead door closer (while more expensive and more involved to install) is much quieter. However for applications where noise is not an issue, this closer works as described and is quite easy to install. There appears to be no fine adjustments to the closing rate. You can only select to put the closing arm into the available holes. Amendment - May 2021 Some time after posting the above review, I found some other reviewers who dismantled the unit and added lithium grease to the spring inside. Did this and after some time the closing noise is nearly inaudible.
