I got hooked on the Southern Reach Trilogy only after seeing the movie version of Anihilation staring Natalie Portman. I’m glad I found these books, they are a strange and spooky delight. The premise is that there is an area along the SE coast of the US that, for want of a better description, is “dimensionally unhinged” from the rest of Earth. And something (or many things) occasionally cross over. A government agency sends teams in to explore it. Often with bad results. This series definitely has overtones of horror to go with it’s sci-fi. Book One is called Anihilation. It deals with the latest (all female) Team being sent across the boundary and into Area X. Authority takes place shortly after the disasters of book 1. But it changes POV characters to a guy who calls himself Control. He is sent (steps in) to run the Southern Reach program that monitors and “contains” Area X after bad things happen to the mission of Book 1. One of his primary problems is to debrief the only apparent survivor. The story is sufficiently different IMO that it only has minor “spoilers” for the first book. You could start the series here. The knowledge the reader gaines from Control’s experiences would significantly change the context that surrounds the narrative of Book 1...but it’d still be a fascinating read IMO. Despite Controls many (many) flaws, I suspect you’ll end up rooting for him. Partly because everyone else in the Southern Reach (and their agendas) seem just as flawed, and partly because you can see that despite the burnout and weirdness, he is really trying to do the right thing. As is everyone else. Even as they sinks deeper and deeper into something that, in the end, is too weird and unstable to be controllable by anyone. For me the social interactions (and conflict) between all the damaged people in Southern Reach program was ultimately the most interesting element of the book for me. Buts it’s also tightly plotted and well written with strong male and female characters. And like an onion, both the government program and Control get peeled layer by layer as the story unfolds, setting up something of a cliff hanger at the end that leads into book 3 (Acceptance). If you also like horror or spy stories in addition to sci-fi, this book will strongly appeal to you and reward you on many levels. You should get this book. You need to read both Book 1 and Book 2 before going on to Book 3.

Interesting and disturbing take on the whole Alien invasion concept. Pretty dense and opaque, at times but still worth reading.

If you are at all familiar with the city of Ambergris on the river Moth you will of read at least one of Jeff Vandermeer's fabulous tales of the great city. Unique is an oft used word but the stories culminating in the masterpiece Finch are as good as any modern fantasy series. Here Vandermeer starts a new cycle The Southern Reach Trilogy, to be released over a span of a few months in 2014. An expedition is sent to an unsettling area, seemingly deserted and at once a sense of dread which is almost palpable descends on the group. A strange underground structure not marked on their maps is discovered and from then on a series of weird and not so wonderful discoveries follows. It would spoil the story to reveal more but the overpowering feeling of impending doom and the way this is skilfully woven into the story proves once more that this writer is one of the if not the leading light in dark fantasy writing. I look forward to the next instalment but be warned this is disturbing stuff.
