Q: Does this cause soap scum type of buildup in the shower?

I suppose it can if you leave it exposed in there. However, that will make your body wash bar go faster. I would suggest taking it out or placing it in a soap box.

Q: ok to use on the face?

I use it on my face. I like it better than the Ethique face bars. Leaves me feeling clean and moisturized.
