The BeachTek DXA-5Da is a two-channel, transformer balanced XLR adapter for attaching external microphones and other audio gear to any DSLR camera that has a built-in mic jack. It can also be used with any camcorder or other audio recording device that has a mic jack. The DXA-5Da uses high quality balancing transformers, which are completely noise free for superb audio. The DXA-5Da is very easy to set up and use. It allows you to connect a wide variety of audio devices including professional microphones, wireless systems and even take a feed from a house sound system or mixer. The built-in level meters show the input signal strength at a glance while the trim controls allow you to adjust the input level for optimum recording. The headphone jack lets you monitor the audio that is coming out of the adapter. A unique feature of the DXA-5Da is the ability to control the wild swings of the Auto Gain Control that plague most cameras. This dramatically reduces noise during quiet moments of recording. The adapter mounts to the bottom of the camera and can also be mounted to any standard tripod. PLEASE NOTE: This Item Does Not Provide Phantom Power To Microphone's Requiring Phantom Power

Exactly what I need for XLR to DSLR
I cannot say enough good things about BeachTek's customer service. I purchased this product off Amazon.com and just a few hours later tech support from BeachTek called me to make sure this product would work properly with the equipment I was using. They asked about each of my cameras and mics just to make sure that I had selected the correct product. (Which, in this case I did) Their main concern was to see if I needed phantom power for any mics that I use. (I didn't) That's what impressed me right from the beginning. So far I've used this product on two video shoots and it works great. Once again, treat this unit as a very delicate piece of equipment! Don't be rough, throw it in your equipment bag and expect it to keep working. Treat it nicely and it will last a long time. :) I hope that helps your decision.RE Peterson[...]

Works great would recommend it.
This helped out a lot with audio the feature for auto gain sending out a tone during silent section helped out with the ramp up of the audio. I would recommend you also buy additional mic cords and audio cords too, so you can use it off camera if needed and if you want to setup the microphone off camera. Also pickup an xlr to mini adapter since most of the mics have mini jacks

Nice Form - Poorly Built
I ordered the BeachTek DXA-5Da, and upon its arrival, I immediately decided to return it. The casing is a cheap plastic; much cheaper than I expected. For example, the 9 volt battery cover has a very cheap cover and clip that would wear out very quickly. After opening it just one time, I knew that it will never hold up to daily production use. It's a rigid plastic tab built similarly to a TV remote battery cover... and we've ALL had to tape one of those closed... just imagine having to replace the 9 volt battery every few hours, and dealing with that. No, thanks... I'll pass.If you're going to spend the money for this, do yourself a favor and spend the extra $20 and get the BeachTek DXA-SLR with phantom power, and metal body.

Great to monitor audio, but cheap, plastic build
Let me start off by saying it's amazing to be able to monitor your audio on your Canon 7D. For a few years I've been relying on my Rode Video Mic and on occasion it's been switched off by mistake without me knowing. I also can't stand to sync audio from my Zoom H4n using my lavs (even with Plural Eyes), so this is beautiful. It's the cheap plastic box that gets me. It looks great mounted below my 7D, but it makes the camera completely shaky and unstable when mounted on my 504HD/536 Manfrotto combo tripod. I also tried it on my shoulder mount with my follow focus, but every time I turned the focus dial, the camera would bend up and down making my shots useless. I really like the functionality of the circuitry itself, but have to give it three stars for not being in a metal enclosure.

Fantastic for DSLRs!!!
This Beachtek adapter was the answer for my audio problems!I couldn't hook up an XLR shot gun mic to my Canon 60D and this was the perfect solution! So easy to use and monitor sound with. Highly recommended!

No good.
Seems great for Canon 5D but has a few problems setting it up. The fact that doesn't have PHANTOM POWER makes it pretty useless.

Great hardware, drinks alot of batt.
It is a great piece for the price, it just takes so many batteries, you may want to buy a box of 9v batteries with tis.

Life Saver
I do a lot of interview shoots and I like the portability and results from my Canon 5D MKII but as a professional I need levels and a way to monitor the audio. This makes that all possible and the quality is amazing. I have used Beachteck products in the past and this one is in the right place at the right time

hmm
