If it aint't broke, don't fix it
An anniversary gift, this lovely little book, I was respectfully reminded, combined two of my great loves - namely history and cricket.A short history of the early game and it's laws, it sets the scene of it's origins (possibly as early as the Middle Ages) and contains reprints of two of the earliest written laws of the game, dating from 1744 and 1755.What will strike the modern scholar of the game is, aside form the occassionaly archane language of the 18th Century codes, how little has been changed in the intervening years.A fascinating treatise on the origins of the great game's laws, the text is well complimented by a fascinating collection of venerable pictures. There is a certain irony in the foreward being provided by a former England captain who fell foul of the ball tampering legislation himself in 1994 !
