DescriptionA wonderful late 19th or early 20th century watercolour landscape depicting a small village and dominating mountains by the artist William Monk (1863-1937). Monk has captured an idyllic view of rural life, with the lush green fields and far reaching stone walls. The small cottages all puff out smoke from their chimney's and the dark clouds are parting to reveal bright sunshine. His delicate brushwork and natural colours are expertly applied to the surface, with washes of watercolour layered to create a depth and perspective in the composition. Monk is well known for his etchings of architectural views of London and Winchester, in 2013 the 150th anniversary of the artist's birth was marked at the city’s Grosvenor Museum with the exhibition ‘A Vision of England: Etchings by William Monk’. Painted on wove and laid to a thick card. Signed. ConditionThe condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and mount burn. Overall in good condition.BiographyWilliam Monk was born in 1863 near Chester, and was the son of a gun maker.
