Great read but much more intense than movie!
This is much more graphic/serious than the movie. ****TRIGGER WARNING **** There is some serious and graphic talk of suicide. The female characters are even more fabulous, the men even more despicable, and the revenge even sweeter, albeit with a bit more complicated story. AND things get a lot meaner.Enjoyed this immensely! Really enjoy olivia Goldsmith!

Even though dated this is a great book.
This is a really great book about women finding themselves after defining themselves through their husbands. Yes, the book is a bit dated but it's still a great read. It's nice to see women bonding and working toward a common goal of justice and blooming later in life. I have seen the movie and compared to the book it is shallow and poorly done. If you've seen the movie and want to read the book, throw out your preconceived notions of the characters as portrayed by the actresses. In my opinion it was miscast. Just read and enjoy the book and these great ladies.

Not bad, but doesn't stand up to the movie
Normally I like books better than movies, but this is the rare exception. It's a perfectly fine book, but it lacks the charm of the movie, so it's best if you try to separate the movie from the book in your mind when you read this.

Hell hath no fury
Annie Paradise, Brenda Cushman, and Elise Elliot knew each other but it was not until their friend Cynthia Swann Griffin committed suicide that they became real friends out of a need to get revenge on their ex-husbands as well as Cynthia's ex-husbandAnnie's husband Aaron left her for her sex therapist and left her to raise Sylvie, their daughter with Down's syndrome. She wants to get back at him for this as well as spending their daughter's inheritance to buy stock that went belly up. Eventually she falls in love with Miguel who is investigating Gill Griffin.Brenda's ex-husband Morty left her for a woman half her size and does not want to pay her alimony or child support. When she finds out that his company went public, she sees red. She eventually falls in love with the lawyer (a woman) who handles the case for herElise Elliot was left by her husband Bill for somebody considerably younger than her. To get him back she sells his antiques to Brenda for a dollar. She eventually falls in love with a man who is a lot younger than her. They also try to get Gill back by stopping a big deal he has with a Japanese Company and defile his car that is the love of his life.If you are a fan of the movie The First Wives Club be advised, the movie is almost nothing like the book. There are some similarities, but not many.

If you liked the movie, even if you didn't like the movie, you'll love the book!
If your only knowledge of The First Wives Club is the movie, you owe it to yourself to check out the much better book on which it waas based. I would watch Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Maggie Smith read a phone book, so I enjoyed their performances immensely, but the screenplay left out most of the best parts of the far more nuanced book. Unlike the movie versions, the book's characters are much more multi-faceted. And the secondary characters, like Brenda's decorate friend Duarte and Morty's second wife Shelby, are fully developed, rather than shtick-laden caricatures (although Bronson Pinchot and Sarah Jessica Parker are very entertaining). In fact, after stumbling across the movie on TV, I had to re-read the book to remind myself of how satisfying it was. This is the best of all possible worlds - page-turning, engrossing and entertaining reading, but with characters and situations that are intelligently written and thought-provoking.

Expected it to be like the movie
I realize it's my fault for not paying more attention to the description of the story. I had watched the movie more times then I can count and just believed the book would be the same. Didn't stop to realize the book had been out first, hence making the movie. I was looking to read a light and funny book. The characters were to some degree like in the movie and it's hard not to picture them that way when you are reading. But they were not the same type of friends like I'd expected. It was more dark and serious and a lot more swearing then I cared for. I usually sail through a great book. I only read a few pages at a time and would have to keep going back and re-reading to remind myself what had happened. I'm sure it's a good book for someone else. But if your going to read it thinking it's the movie but of course a lot longer with more details as is the case for most books then you may be disappointed. I read many books i.e "Twilight" "Drew/Lacy Peterson case" and the like and realize it's a bit different then movie but there is so much that doesn't go along in a light and silly way with this one. I will try reading it again with a fresh mind and perhaps I may appreciate it better the second time.

Good Book--Nothing Like the Movie
The book was not "hilarious" but had a good story. About the only similarities with the movie was that there were 3 women, they were left by their husbands, and they did form the First Wives Club. That's about it :-)

Poor print quality and an okay story
The story is good if you can ignore the fact it hasn't aged too well. However, large swathes of it seem a bit irrelevant.Story aside, I wasn't happy with the overall print quality, some pages were very feint and it was hard to read them.

Good story
It’s a hard read. Very focused writing - nothing like film so don’t be disappointed- but a good story and worth sticking with.

It was so much better when read 1st time
I read this book 15 years ago and I loved it. Intrigue, pace, picture of New York... All wonderful. 15 years later all this charm is gone, leaving entertaining revenge story with few perks.
