My son loves these reeds. Yes, they are expensive, but have the best sound of any reeds we have bought so far. I would recommend these reeds to anyone who wants to have a beautiful sound and achieve the best results with their saxophone. Highly recommended by his teacher and I hesitated due to the price, but glad we bought them. We will not be buying any others besides the Vandoren.

This reed has been very good for my bigginer musician . Fits the mouthpiece really good and has a great sound . I recommend it.

Really good reeds

It is exactly as described. Wish they were more durable for beginning musicians. Going through reeds faster right now. Not this company's fault.

These were good for some classical symphony rep I played on closed tip mouthpieces. As usual for Vandoren, these were very polished, consistent reeds. They give a bit more support and focus for classical playing in general. All reeds are made of cane, known as Arundo Donax. It is not wood or bamboo, but more closely related to tall grasses. It grows around river banks and lakes with moving water. It absorbs the water for growth and nutrients. It MUST be properly collected when the stalk is drained of water in the winter (dry season) and it must be drained and dried to avoid including biological and chemical impurities. The climate also affects its density, which limits where good reed stock can grow. Cane will absorb whatever is in the water where it grows. Good reeds should have a smooth vamp (shaped upper part) and have a golden- yellow or light yellow color without much variation. The bark can be of varied tone (glossy-looking bottom part). That's OK. It should not have fibrous longitudinal protrusions on the vamp (part that goes inside the mouth). Green looking reeds have not been properly dried and drained. Throw them away. Grey looking reeds or ones with dark spots or streaks may have mold. Throw them away also. (This is highly unlikely in Vandoren or Daddario reeds). Good reeds are expensive. However, with proper care, you CAN make them last months.. or longer. Just teach your kids proper care skills. It's a wonderful way to teach being responsible. Always take the reed off after playing. Always put them back into the holder (or get a special case). NEVER touch the tip of the reed (I see kids do it all the time.. and they break the reeds). Practice securing the reed to the mouthpiece with the ligature without tripping the tip. Carefully wash the reeds with water once a week, wiping with clean fingers, bottom to top. And lastly, don't play one reed all the time. Have a few ready to go and rotate them. If you do this, or teach your kids, a box of quality reeds will last you a very long time... and you won't have to buy cheap non-reeds made in china..

They are made with durable Material and make saxophone sound great. We order one box to replace once a semester for my sons band. They are easy to install on instrument.

I had always stubbornly remained a Rico Royal loyalist throughout all my years in band. All the claims of “Vandorens are the best reeds” fell on deaf ears to me. Since I was younger, any time I had to use a Vandoren reed, I hated it. I was always given Vandoren 3-3.5 reeds by others and they were way too hard for me to get a good sound on. In band, it was often a p*ssing contest to see how high of a reed you could play on. I never dared to play anything softer than a 3, as it would make me the laughing stock of the section. Well. Fast forward to me being an adult out of school, playing for my own leisure. I learned that a Rico Royal 3 is probably more comparable to a Vandoren 2.5 than a Vandoren 3 reed, anyway. So all this time, my pride of using at least a 3 reed meant nothing. “Hmm,” I thought. “I wonder if I would like Vandorens if I tried them in a 2.5 strength then.” No one was around to mock me. And even if they were, I wouldn’t have cared at this age. Curiosity got the best of me. I deleted the Rico Royals from my Amazon cart and added these. Lo and behold, much to my stubborn displeasure, I was right. These worked like a charm. Moral of the story, don’t limit yourself to one reed brand or one reed strength. Try stuff out, you might be surprised! I will probably be buying these again next time, and grumbling to myself about betraying my beloved Rico Royals as I do it, lol.
