These tones and probes are hard to beat even if they are somewhat overpriced. The filtered probes work much better in a high induction situation

I bought the PE620 tone generator/continuity tester and 500xp tone probe to trace alarm loops. I had problems with the 500xp, so I returned it and bought the 200 fp. The 200 fp is going back too.The PE620 works great. It generates tones, and can check n.o. and n.c. circuits both instantaneously and it can also latch to catch transients. My only criticism is I wish the beeper for continuity was louder so that it could be heard from far away. If you have it at the alarm panel connected to a zone loop, you will need someone to listen for beeping and they will need to call out to you or you'll need a set of walkie-talkies. The tone generation is powerful, though it is not the most powerful unit that Greenlee sells, (that would be the 77HP-G).Unfortunately, both the 500xp and the 200fp see the tones on any conductor that is adjacent to the conductor the tone generator is connected to. The signal is being inductively picked up by every wire in the multi-wire cables that connect my alarm loops.With the loops disconnected from the panel I have tried every combination of filter and no filter. I have tried all manner of connections - floating, grounded, closed loop, opened loop, using potentiometer to dial down the signal level, etc.The 500xp has a stepped sensitivity control and the 200fp has a continuously variable (potentiometer) setup. Tried all sensitivities. Same problem.Tracing the loops I find the signal everywhere, whether it is connected or not, with equal intensity.The 500xp at lowest sensitivity setting begins sounding the tones when I first walk into the room nowhere near the wiring. The 200fp which has a lower amplification, at lowest sensitivity begins sounding a few feet away from the wiring.Even trying the metal tip with the 500xp I still find the signal strong where it is not connected. Even trying directly contacting the conductors, it is still virtually impossible to differentiate live from not connected alarm loops.I ended up with disconnecting the wires from the panel and grounding the wires in question at that end and then using a DMM Ohmmeter compare to ground to find the sections of the loops in question.I kept the PE620 because I believe it works properly and I have found the continuity tester very useful, though I wish it was louder. I would buy the PE620 again and I give it 4 stars.The 500xp was basically useless for me and I returned it. I would not recommend it, and I would not buy it again. Even if you were using it to trace BX or MC power cables, I think the stepped sensitivity settings are a deal breaker. 500xp 1 star.I returned the 200fp and I would not buy it again. Because the sensitivity settings are continuous, it might work well with BX or MC power cable tracing, but it is a no go for alarm loops. 200fp 2 stars.

This is the upgrade to the wand that so many of us have been using for years. This one has an ON button. You do not have to hold down the button to keep the wand turned on. It will turn itself off in a few minutes, If you push the button again it filters out the 60Hz hum that in present everywhere. It does cost more but you get more bang for your buck.

Purchased this probe becuase of the good reviews and features. But there is one major flaw this item is not durable whatsoever. The very first time I've ever dropped it and it breaks. I understand it is just plastic but I had a Progressive Electronics probe that I had for more than 10 yrs that I'm sure had been dropped several times. The only reason is replaced it is because the speaker stopped working. For the money this item should be more durable since most purchases for this item is I'm sure made by professional's.
