Q. David Bowers - A Numismatic Gift
Is there really a better author than Q. David Bowers when it comes to Numismatics? He is the best....nobody else comes close. There are also some great writers when it comes to rare coins but Bowers is the King. When this book came out in 2004 I bought a copy and I just bought another one. Of course the pricing is out of date....you need real time for pricing in Numismatics. Yes, rare coins can be very dangerous when it comes to making a profit, but collect for enjoyment. Bowers stresses that in this book and every book he has written and I think I own them all.The book is awesome.....he goes through each date and mint issue by issue. Clueing us all in on the different aspects of each coin. Pricing of course will tell us which issues are rare and which are common. The narrative.....you might as well be listening to your best friend. Or your best girlfriend. Bowers words just glide. If you like Double Eagles get the book. If you like History get the book. If you have never bought a rare coin before but are contemplating doing that, most certainly get the book. And really get all of Davids books.

The Bible for Double Eagle Collectors
Whitman Publishing's "A Guide Book To Double Eagles" is a dually-useful book that covers the 2 types of Double Eagles minted in the United States from 1849-1933. The Liberty Head (or Coronet) Double Eagle was struck from 1849-1907 and the Saint-Gaudens type was struck from 1907-1933.This book has a brief summary of every year and mintmark of Double Eagle….population data and estimates…..production numbers....survival estimates…estimated price (and premiums to gold content)…plus commentary on specific details pertaining to that year’s coinage. There are also very interesting commentaries on gold coins and Double Eagles interspersed throughout the book: the 1933 Double Eagle, shipwrecked coins and other hoards, economic panics, gold strikes in California and Cripple Creek (Colorado), etc.The major problem with this book has nothing to do with its content or style. It has to do with the date. Specifically, the publishing date and the coin data are from the early-2000’s. We now have 20 more years of data and changes in population statistics, new stories to tell, updated pricing, etc. This book DESPERATELY needs a 2nd edition and shame on Whitman Publishing for not getting either the incomparable David Bowers to update it or someone to assist him in a joint effort. This book is STILL very useful for having information and data on both the Liberty Head and Saint-Gaudens coin series in one book. While rarity and scarcity rankings have changed somewhat, the basic relative positions of most of the coins in most grades have remained fairly constant. But new finds, hoards, increased certification totals, and “gradeflation” have all swelled the population numbers, and sometimes at the high-end where few examples existed 20 years ago. What is preventing a 2nd Edition, I don't know.Despite the dated population, price, and scarcity data…..despite the lack of new information and stories on new finds, hoards, and sources of coins….despite a voluminous amount of information available on the Internet and in Roger Burdette’s 2018 Saint-Gaudens publication (but no Liberty Head DE information in that masterful book)….this Red Book on Double Eagles is STILL worth buying if you have a general interest in Double Eagles or more specifically, either or both of the Liberty Head and Saint-Gaudens coin series. It is also somewhat interesting -- and amusing !! -- to compare the population data and certification totals from the book to what is available in updated totals directly from the grading services themselves. Some of the changes in Gem and Superb Gem numbers are pretty striking.Happy Hunting !

Well written/decent resource
While not nearly as good as the Mike Fuljenz books on pre-1933 US gold coins, the book had a good amount of information about double eagles. Fuljenz has yet to write a book about double eagles and there are not many hard copy resources available at this time.I thought the information was well written but the format is really terrible. Small text on bland pages with only a few inset pages in color. I spent quite a bit of time reading the pages through a magnifying glass and I'm a younger man who does not wear corrective lenses!
