Beautiful book
I like the explanations and background. The instructions are clear and the pictures are beautiful. It's a lovely book that has inspired some delicious family meals. Negative points are that it uses obscure specialist ingredients to make some westernised dishes, also, many of the recipes use meat, which personally I am looking to move away from. I'm glad I bought it though, its broadened by culinary experience.

Excellent home style recipes
Made a few already, very easy and quick recipes, e.g. omelette with rice, chicken and omelette.

I have tried my first recipe and it was excellent. Very good explanations of the sauces and ingredients.

Mixed feelings
Lots of lovely pictures and well described recipes but some are just a bit too involved and use authentic ingredients that just aren't available everywhere.

Inspiring and easy to follow
I love the mix of easy and slightly more challenging dishes (The chicken teriyaki is so easy and tasty!) and great to have the extra insights like the etiquette guide at the start. I can see this being a great go to for when I want to treat friends (or just myself and husband!)

I really like this cookbook. The recipes seem to be authentic for Japanese home cooking, and photos accompany each recipe. There are even a recipe and photo for making gyoza wrappers. The recipes are precise except the one for chicken karaage, page 57, which calls for “6 free range skin-on boneless chicken thighs.” Since chicken thighs come in varying sizes, a precise weight here would have been helpful, if only as a benchmark. Otherwise, this is a thorough cookbook for Japanese “home-cooked comfort food.”

I have made several dishes from this book and they have all turned out so delicious. A good range of recipes that require common asian ingredients. Good for beginners as well as experienced cooks. She gives recipes for different types of common dashi (soup base), and explains the different types of miso and rice.
