Is this really necessary?** A: According to my audiologist, regulations now forbid the use of mercury in hearing aid batteries, so the modern ones run on different electro-chemical principles than batteries did formerly. If you look closely, you'll see tiny holes in the back of the battery that allow air to enter the battery once the tab is removed. This step, apparently, is necessary to give the battery a little head start in its operation. Again, my audiologist tells me that it's her experience that a 10-minute wait is preferable to a 2-3 minute wait in order to get maximum life out of a battery. My wife and I have been observing the 10-minute practice and find that the batteries last a little more than a week using them up to about 12 hours per day. **Q: How many days should these last if you take them out at night.
