I was searching for a drain valve for my Bradford White Defender Model RG1PV50S6N (50-gallon) water heater, which supports a traditional 2" shank and 3/4" port. The issue with standard drain valves is that their smaller diameter often prevents larger sediments from being flushed out, especially when the anode rod is corroded or during annual water heater flushing. After doing thorough research, including looking into straight flow valves, I ended up choosing this one due to space constraints. The diameter of the valve knob is noticeably larger than traditional valves, and the build quality is excellent—it's made of solid brass. The on/off knob is heavy and easy to operate, and the cap that comes with it is a nice touch. This is one of the best online purchases I've made. If you know anything about water heaters you would know that they need to be flushed every so often more or less depending on your particular situation. The valves that come with the water heaters are always so tiny which never made any sense and often clog or don’t provide enough water flow to actually push the sediment out of the heater. This bad boy will do the trick, has plenty of water flow and really cut down on the time it takes to remove the sediment. The valve is thick and the handle feels good, it’s well built. It doesn’t have any cheap parts that will just bend or break by the next time you go to flush your heater. Would recommend 👍🏻

Made a flushing water heater a breeze!

Well designed and great quality. Cheaper than putting one together yourself from parts at the home improvement stores. Now to wait and see how well it holds up. Came with a roll of good quality Teflon tape. I bought pipe dope (T+2) as well for $3 and dabbed a thin coat after wrapping it up with tape. You will need a plumber grade pipe wrench if your water heater has a factory fitted drain valve. Some tips: Drain first before attempting to change the valve so you don't cause a leak/break when taking the old one off. After installing, you can then use the turn on/turn off cold water feed valve to agitate and flush. Also, when installing, you may need to either remove the valve handle (removable nut) or move the handle 90 degrees in open position (due to clearance when using tools) so make sure you use the included hose end cap to close the hose end side when installing to prevent accidental discharge. This is a nice upgrade from the factory drain valve for any diligent home owner!

First, I have major sediment and limescale buildup. The AO smtih drain valve is just too small for extreme buildup. I couldn't get it to flush out so I had to remove the valve and pick at it with a copper wire repeatly to restart the flow until the tank was empty. Using a pipe wrench I removed they old and swapped it out. The output flow increased dramatically. I'm going to perform a few more heater drain in the coming weeks but so far I'm impressed. As one other reviewer noted the thread do not seem to be of high quality. Only time will tell.

Perfect replacement for a standard water heater drain valve. I highly recommend not waiting for the failure to happen, replace the plastic valves during installation! Water heater manufacturers (at least at the big box store brand) decided to save $2 by shipping with plastic drain valves instead of brass like they used to. At least for the standard models (my 9-yr warranty rheem had the plastic) The plastic valves will fail, and will make a mess. Even worse, when you want to replace it when it does fail the plastic often becomes brittle and breaks during removal. Prevent that by replacing before the failure. As far as this valve itself, it’s an upgrade in itself over a standard brass or plastic design that water heaters come with. It’ll drain the water heater much quicker due to the large diameter, ball valve is easy open/close, the safety cap has a rubber gasket so it’s leak proof even if you accidentally hit it. I’d expect this valve to outlast the water heater, you could probably transfer it for 30 years through 3 water tank replacements.

Didn't use the tape as I had plenty in my toolbox. Anyway, highly recommended to replace your existing plastic spigot.. this provides pretty much 4x the flow of those cheapy plastic spigots (took forever to empty my 100 galon water heater). installation is easy - just clean the threads on the water heater, etc.. you now what should be done. My water heater had a metal cover over the old one, I just used a pair of snipers and cut what I needed so the new valve tip and the handle are accessible. This has a threaded cover so the spigot opening won't be left open for bugs... doesn't matter too much as everything would be washed away on the next cleanup, but it's nice.

Easy to install. I can now drain the water heater much faster then with the OEM water valve. I like the cap for the tap/valve.

Used this to replace the cheap plastic valve that I had on my hot water tank. This new valve opens much wider than the stock and makes draining the tank easier and faster.

I have hard water and I flush my tank every 6 months. The OEM drain would often clog. This drain fit perfectly and never clogs as it has a large and straight opening due to the ball valve.
