UPDATE- This drive that I first reviewed failed within two months. I gave it a 5-star review. So, I bought a second one - and it began having problems almost immediately. I called their tech support, was handed off to a text messaging tech and explained what was happening (the drive LED was constantly flashing) and after trying a few things, they finally said to use my Disk Utility. After I did that, it found numerous errors, once the utility was finished the drive began working properly and I haven't had another issue yet. It was good to know that their tech support was available to resolve my issue. FIRST DRIVE REVIEW: I was using a WD 1T Passport with the original USB connection from practically the dark ages and it was performing so slowly, taking hours to back up. I finally bought this 5T model and it backs up in bare minutes. It plugs directly into my MacBook Pro with USB C. No complaints, it works seamlessly with Time Machine.

I got it and it's working was left on the ground outside. It makes me mad when the first Wd did not work they talked to me like I did not know how to use it.

It is an external hard drive that has spinning platters. Care must be taken not to move it when it is operating. I wish it was like the SSD drives as it needs a power source to operate.

I was under the delusion of corporate advertising that all the data on my iMac was safely stored on this portable drive, and was accessible to me to retrieve......I was a modern day fool. When I signed into my At&T internet account, all kinds of stuff went into my saved data, and most of my really important data was corrupted. A call to the WD customer service staff was essentially met with "call Apple customer service", which I did and the again brilliant employees at Apple had me retrieve the missing and corrupted data from my iCloud account. I learned a valuable lesson from this experience: don't trust AT&T (2 wasted hours on the phone) for any assistance, and don't trust the corporate advertising that "your data is safe with our product"......it is not if I cannot access my own data. The solution for me was to disconnect this WD product from my iMac......demolish it with a hammer (outside and inside the portable hard drive)...reduce it to destroyed, and throw it in the trash. The AT&T internet services and the WD portable hard drive no longer exist for me, and I sleep better knowing they are gone from my life......adios aggravation and wasted monies.

I love it because I can take to any where I go and it can holds everything I need to take with my for my job.

My Time Capsule finally failed after 14 years. I was looking for a replacement. I use a MacBook Pro and would have preferred a WIFI connected device, but the Passport was adequate as I don't move my MacBook Pro as much as I used to so having an external disk attached is not too inconvenient. The Passport Ultra was formatted for the Mac and was very simple to attach and use. The initial backup took over 12 hours, but that was still faster than the Time Capsule. The only problem I have is that apparently the power it gets from the USB-C is not sufficient and the drive goes offline briefly causing the Time Machine to go into delay mode. If I try to open the Passport drive, it appears empty (no Time Machine backups). If I eject the drive and reattach it, everything works again. This happens once or twice a day. The web seems to indicate that using a drive with an external power source would solve this problem. However, I prefer living with the current situation than to have a separate power supply.

Update: changed review from 1 star to 5. Turns out my new Macbook Pro was frying these drives. I bought two of these in July 2025 Loaded them up with Data and both of them went out on me within the same week. Never dropped or abused. I think I got a bad batch. Never buying WD drives again.

Superb! Fast, quiet and a fantastic upgrade to my previous hard disks. And, very small with no need for external power supplies thanks to the USB-C connectors. Bought 2 and both fit in my laptop case.

Just started using this disk that I bought in july, but today it broke down on me. Unable to mount and making bad sounds. Probably lost all data on it.

Dopo anni di onorato servizio ho dovuto sostituire un analogo hard disk western Digital, in quanto il settore del disco era non leggibile/danneggiato. Hard disk compatto, di nuova generazione, bello da vedere, leggero e sottile. Buone performance riguardo il trasferimento dei dati grazie alla porta usb c (presente adattore usb 3.0). Si può anche utilizzare con windows 10 scaricando appositi driver o riformattando l'unità. Consigliato l'acquisto anche per la garanzia di affidabilità del marchio. Spedizione Amazon Prime velocissima con consegna in locker, in alcuni casi si spreca meno tempo che andare in un negozio fisico tradizionale.
