The clamps are quite secure. Jaws open a good 1/4+ inch. I covered my boat for the winter here in Alaska and used the clamps to secure the ends. They also work well if your tarp grommets don't line up where you need to anchor. Hope this helps

Does the tarp clip unscrew so you can put the screw through the grommet?

No it has grooved teeth that clamp onto the tarp itself. I bought several different kinds and this design was far better than the others as you decide how much pressure to clamp it on by the screw.

Is there any metal in the product that might rust?

No metal. Very tough/durable plastic.
