I tried to file them, but then had to wind electrical tape around the entire shaft to cover all the edges. The metal should have been carefully rounded -- very poor engineering! Second, it exceeded my expectations for breaking up ground beef during cooking. We have to buy ground beef to boil for our little, 15-year old dog, who has some health problems. Previously during this process, the beef floated all around in the water and was difficult to break up with just a spatula. Not any more!One feature that I didn't expect is that the edge that breaks up the meat is fairly sharp, and cuts through the meat very quickly!. It is easy to clean and easy to use. It is great on ground beef, and the blade material Never scratched the surface of any non-stick pan.That said, I paid around $4.00, which was crazy cheap. I think the current price is $16.00, which is way too high.
