Magnificent coverage of trends and terminology (but less in the way of construction)
It is worth knowing that the images contained in this book are widely circulated on the internet. The text of this book, however, is still worth the purchase. Providing a basic descriptive overview, it does a good job of showing the movement of trends, even within single decades, and provides enough terminology that a person who's interest is excited by a particular time period can find more detailed sources, elsewhere.Alas, what this book does not do (which I was hoping it might) was provide a sense of how older pieces are constructed -- even in very broad strokes. As someone looking to make a 15th century reticulated headdress, this did not give me much even in the way of guesswork for a place to get started. However, that level of detail is provided for other time periods (for example, hairdressing in the period of the show 'Gentleman Jack' was summarized wonderfully). So your mileage may vary.

Delightfully illustrated Ladie's hats, thorough in time period, construction, and materials.
I make costumes for local theater and I also have for friends for parties and festivals. It really helps me to offer a 'book of record' to someone when I say "This type of head cover was available at that time, and women wore them in this fashion. Maybe you're thinking of this type from eighty years later."I used to use a huge heavy clothing book but with this compendium I even have the typical fabrics used. I cannot wait to use it regularly.

Is it worth it? Sewing Edition
This book is wonderful for costume historians or anyone into this field. I liked the easy reading, with the major hair and headpiece trends being pointed out. This is not a super indepth book, so if you do not have historical competency of styles then you may need additional references. For me the book is a concise break-down of styles, given in an easy to digest manner. The look inside feature accurately portrays what you get in the book. All of the images are drawings and the details on the drawings are clear. This book does not give instruction for how to achieve the looks.Excellent reference book. Is it worth it? Yes. I adore this book!

Great Book
I needed to use this book for drawing purposes and they make it so easy for you. This is a great book that focuses on the hats of the British Empire from as far back as the Migration period and works it way all the way up to the 80's. It's a great book if you want to see how hats evolves from time to time and they write ups for each hat are easy to follow and find the matching hat to due to bolded texts and clearly labels sections. Just remember that the book only deals with Britain and nowhere else. An excellent book. I've very pleased.

This is a nice book for a costumer
This is a nice book for a costumer. But the title is a little misleading since it is only about English hats and headdresses. Of course, more or less the same styles were worn at more or less the same time, but still I can't find the Italian Renaissance or the very distinctive 'Landsknecht'. To sum it up : there's nothing wrong with the book, only with the title.

English styles only.
The only issue I have with this book is that the title should be 'Women's Hats, Headresses and Hairstyles of England'. While still very useful, I had hoped for Continental styles as well. Nonetheless, a great addition to any costuming library.

The Mode in Hats and Headdress" sehr ähnlich. Jedes für sich allein reicht vollkommen aus.

très intéressant
cet ouvrage est parfait pour les couturieres, plus exactement les costumières ou celles qui veulent avoir des conseils. le seul regret est qu'il ne soit pas en français
