VIAIR 400P/40043 12V Portable Air Compressor, 150 PSI for Truck & SUV Tires

The compressor works well, I have used it to fill the RV tires to 80 PSI with no issues. It is quick and having the case to store it is nice, I do wish the battery connections were a bit longer. I had a hard time reaching my rear tire on the 32’ RV. It was pretty quiet for the most part. Had plenty of power to pump up the tires and the tire gauge works well.

So a few years back I purchased an off brand of small portable air compressor. It lasted a while. A trip to the desert, a year of airing up a 300 dollar tire that couldn't be patched because name brand tire dealer doesn't know what a large patch is, and it ran like that for some time. On a recent trip to the beach, in 70 degree weather it crapped out. Smoked. Burned to a cinder and didn't blow the fuse? I bit the bullet. Purchased the 400P. Night and Day difference. Air up is less than half the time. Heat, while any compressor will generate it, is managed well with the duty cycle. QUIET! The el-cheapo was louder than the vehicle, running, and I have a chopped exhaust with a shorty. Accessories... well I don't plan on using it for balls or a mattress. But they are free. Cord, not a fan of the coils, but you have to make a sacrifice for compact storage. Plenty of length for a full size truck. Cool air down feature for the perfectionist. I like it. I also have another tool for this, but it's an option. The gauge is close. About 2 pounds low. It isn't NASCAR or a spaceship. It will get me home. The bag. Time will tell. It works for carrying everything and keeping it in one place. Zippers and snaps will probably go, but it will be a while. Bag is lined. Probably rain resistant. As long as I don't submerge the snorkel it should be ok. Overall, very impressed with how small, fast, powerful, and put together the unit is. Has some weight. This one is a keeper, and cost is decent enough to put 1 in each vehicle.

Aired down four tires for offroad (from 65 psi to 30psi). When it was time to air back up again to 65 psi all around, it took about 4 minutes per tire. This could be easily done without the unit needing to cool down. It has about a 20 minute run time per hour, which is enough to fully air up 4 tires. It is relatively quiet and has good reach for a 20 foot pickup. You don't need to move the unit to reach all four tires. The hose is long enough in addition to the long battery cables. Nice carry case too, that will fit a set of Coyote automatic deflators (which makes the air-down job incredibly easy and fast and accurate to whatever you choose for a preset deflation limit). Portable, small footprint, and very well built. Worth it. Don't go offroad without it.

Unlike other "heavy duty" compressors this one can actually inflate a 19.5 inch tire to 82 psi with apparent ease. The construction is well conceived and all components seem high quality. The only downside is the pressure gauge is wildly inaccurate and a separate high precision gauge must be used. This is true even on standard car tires as well. Other than that it is well worth the investment.

easy to use, I’ve used it so many times and it is so consistent and fast. The most I’ve done consecutively is 10 tires (with small breaks in between to cool down)! It does it so quick as well. I’ve used it on so many trips now and it’s so convenient to use

I have found the viair compressors to be dependable. This model doesn’t take forever to fill up a standard car tire. A must if you are an off road enthusiast or are always on the highway. Your tires don’t typically pop at gas stations and even if they do, the air chuck was probably stolen or the compressor is out of service. I haven’t used a gas station compressor now for over 6 years and have been both off road and on the sides of highways grateful that I have a compressor with me when I needed it. I wouldn’t travel now without one.

I first purchased a Viair 88P from amazon. When I received it the unit did not work properly out of the box. I immediately returned it to Amazon because of a factory defect and decided to order the 400P model because of its greater capacity to move air. I tested it on a SR225-75 large travel trailer tire as soon as I received the unit and was pleased with the results. It inflated the tire to 55psi in about 3 minutes. The cylinder was warm but not hot to the touch. The unit is larger and heavier than the 88P but was worth it because of its much greater capacity to get the job done. It comes with a cloth case that is adequate but not what you would consider heavy duty. It does keep all of the components in one place when needed. The size of the 400P in its case is to large to place under most passenger car seats but could be stored in the trunk or pickup truck tool box. If the components were separated without the case, they might fit under some passenger car seats. The removable air hose is coiled and compact and easily stretched out from the front of my 38' RV to the rear tires. Since it is equipped with an industrial type hose quick connector other hoses or extensions could be added but would probably not ever be needed. I would purchase this unit again and would highly recommend it to others along with a quick external tire puncture repair kit particularly if you drive long distances in rural areas.

After paying $2 to inflate 4 tires at a gas station decided to buy my own inflator. After weighing cost/benefit options chose the Viair 400P. Initially balked at the price but I hate crappy products. Any worry about my choice disappeared with a thorough inspection. Buying online can be a crapshoot but this unit is quality built. Bag is medium grade and could use a third small compartment for filters and extras but a minor issue, also the instructions are in tiny print and hard to read for us old geezers. Showed the 400P to my mechanic and he was very impressed. His first comment was wow even the hose is high quality! Never thought I'd be excited to inflate tires but using a quality tool like this is a pleasure. This pump is fast, easy to use and has a nice sound to it. The pressure gauge as others have noted did not seem accurate. An issue for cars with short valve stems is the horizontal inflator chuck won't fit unless you have enough clearance above wheel cover surface. I bought a 6" flexible valve extension which solves the problem. Read some reviews complain of the 8' power cord as too short. Easy hack is use your jumper cables as extensions. A decent 16' 4 gauge cable will triple your power reach. Saves moving back and forth to turn pump on/off when filling. Also, buy a spare 40 amp fuse JIC.
