Choose your next adventure-ready softshell from The North Face — and Never Stop Exploring. Review: Lightweight, Well-Designed Softshell with Excellent Fit and Versatility - As expected, this is a top-quality piece from The North Face. I’m evaluating it across a few dimensions: function, features & design, materials & components, and construction. Function This is labeled an “approach jacket,” which traditionally means something you wear on the hike to a technical climb. In practice, it’s a lightweight softshell that works just as well for casual or athletic use. Most people will likely wear this around town, but it would feel equally at home on the trail or on the slopes. Versatility is excellent—it doesn’t feel out of place in any setting. Features & Design The feature set is intentionally minimal: • Two zippered hand pockets • One zippered sleeve pocket (large enough for a wallet but not a phone) • No internal pockets • No thumb holes, elastic cuffs, or gimmicks Fit and tailoring are where this jacket really stands out. There are several non-traditional body-shaping panels and darts that clearly prioritize mobility and fit. TNF consistently does a great job designing garments around movement, and this jacket is a good example of that. It’s also impressively light—one of those jackets that’s genuinely fun to pick up and throw on because it weighs so little. Large is 360g. Materials & Components The defining material here is the WindWall fleece. It’s a lightweight, hard-faced fleece that blocks most wind while still allowing reasonable breathability. It feels proprietary, but it’s in the same family as hard-faced fleeces from Polartec or Patagonia. This material is best suited for low to moderate output activities—walking around town, casual hiking, or cool-weather layering. It’s not designed for sustained high-output endurance use, where maximum breathability would matter more than wind blocking. Zippers are excellent, as expected: • Main zipper: locking YKK #5 reverse coil with smooth action • Pocket zippers: YKK #3, non-locking also reverse YKK remains the gold standard for durability, and every component here feels premium. Construction Construction is flawless. Mostly serged seams with selective topstitching, plus welded seams on the arm pocket and side pockets. It’s very clean and minimal—no unnecessary complexity, just well-executed construction. Final Thoughts For the brand, materials, fit, and design, this jacket is absolutely worth the cost. It’s versatile, lightweight, and packable enough that it’s easy to toss into a bag or the back seat “just in case.” I expect this to become a go-to jacket across multiple seasons. 5 / 5 stars. No hesitation. Review: Outstanding quality from The North Face as always - Who doesn't need a lightweight windbreaker that is water resistant as well? We all do. It is easy to pack and has all the quality The North Face is famous for. The fit is perfect and aligns with the chart provided, and this is an outstanding value for the money because it will become your go-to jacket when weather changes are coming and you will be out in it. It fits without hindering movement and is so lightweight you will forget you have it on. This is not a cold weather jacket, so if you need warmth I would suggest that you wear it underneath this windproof and weather resistant jacket as to layer for the anticipated coldness to come. The fleece lining is top notch and the pockets are warm. An. additional zippered pocket is on the sleeve for any essentials you might need on your trek such as lip protection and energy bars. It is 91% recycled polyester and 9% elastane fleece from non-PFC durable water repellant finish. Very important to have this coating. It features a wrap-around back panel with a hip belt for use when carrying a pack. A drawstring at the hem improves adjustability. Elastic cuffs stay in place and seal out the elements. The neck is reinforced for long term comfort and durability. I have purchased The North Face gear for many years and have found it to be thoroughly tested by real outdoors people and it performs at the highest level. I can say that everything I have purchased has been a bargain due to the fact I use it all the time instead of leaving it in the closet. Value is realized with the benefits a product offers. Grey is Purple
Great jacket but the “transcendent grey” should just be called “light purple” because that’s what it is.

North Face Quality – Perfect Everyday Windbreaker
This is exactly what you expect from The North Face. It’s lightweight but not flimsy, warm without being bulky, and perfect for spring, fall, or just an everyday layer to keep in the car. The Lava Red color definitely leans more orange than deep red, which I personally like. It stands out without being too loud. I picked this up for my mom since she likes to layer underneath, and the Large gives her room to do that comfortably. The WindWall fabric blocks wind well and has a DWR finish so light rain beads off instead of soaking in. The fleece lining adds warmth, the elastic cuffs stay put, and the hem drawcord helps seal things up when it’s breezy. You also get secure zip hand pockets plus a small zip pocket on the sleeve for keys or small essentials. Fit is true to size with good mobility through the shoulders, and the stretch in the fabric makes it comfortable for everyday wear or light outdoor use. Overall, it’s a versatile, well-built jacket from a brand that consistently delivers quality products at a premium cost.

Very Limited Use Case
Hmmmm... I'm on the fence with this one. I have had several North Face fleece and jackets over the years. When it says fleece lined I expected the same second layer sewn in fleece lining that I've come to love from the North Face. Instead it's like a checkerboard style, non-solid finished face of the primary layer. Since 50% of the fleece is missing from this checkerboard it is a little less north face of the mountain and more south face in early spring. It really is more of a thin wind breaker with light fleece interior surface than a full on jacket meant for actual cold weather. The red is very vibrant and the checkerboard pattern can be lightly seen from the outside too. It is water resistant but there is no hood so it's not really a rain jacket either... I have no idea why they didn't include a removable hood with this. So that just further reduces its uses. It doesn't layer well either since it doesn't breathe all that much. No rain, early spring, early fall, slight chilly weather and that's about it. The only thing I truly don't like is the arm pocket. I don't know why but I'm just not a fan of big bulky arm pockets. They stick out too much, especially in this case being a different tone of red, and what can you really put in them that's useful? I hate to harp on the jacket but everyone is saying that it's amazing and other than having a North Face logo on it, nothing seems premium about it. You can get similar quality these days for about a quarter of the price.

You're paying for the brand -- but it's a great brand!
For a windbreaker made of synthetic fabric, this can seem a little expensive. You're certainly paying a lot for the branding! But with that in mind, it's an exceptionally good windbreaker. The fit and sizing is excellent. I would normally wear a Medium in a shirt or sweater, and given that this is meant to be outerwear, I ordered the Large, and the fit is fantastic over a sweater. (For reference, I'm 6'1", 190 lbs, 33" waist). It might be loose over just a t-shirt, but I don't plan on every wearing it like that. Sleeve length is just right, which for a Large is remarkable--I tend to find sleeves on Large tops too long for my arms. (For reference, my business shirt size is 16.5, 34/35) It is only a single layer of fabric in most areas (the deep pockets add some extra layers), but the fabric is kind of flocked on the inside, so it's much less plasticky-feeling than most other polyester fabrics. Definitely intended for colder wet weather, as it stays quite warm. Not really intended for a summer rain shower, if you know what I mean. (But then North Face isn't really a summer brand!) Is it good value for money? It's definitely on the expensive side, but it's also at the very top end in quality. You get what you pay for.

A Great Looking and Well Designed Jacket
I ordered The North Face Men’s Tek Approach Jacket in a size Large and in the color Lava Red for my husband. He is 6’1” and weighs 190 lbs. His usual size is a Large. This jacket fit him but with a lightweight full zip jacket underneath, it was tight. So if you plan on layering, I would suggest that you consider ordering up a size. Without the full zip underneath, the jacket fit fine. I would say this jacket has an athletic fit. I included measurements in my photos to help with the sizing. The Lava Red is actually orange, it’s a great color but be aware that it is not red. This jacket is very well designed and well made. It is lined with a soft waffle weave fabric that traps and holds your body heat so this jacket is surprisingly warm. It is water repellent, water beads up on the fabric and runs off, it does not soak in. And this fabric is excellent at blocking out the wind and it has a cinch cord on the bottom to keep the wind out. The fabric has a little stretch to it so it will move with you. There are 2 side pockets that are fully zippered to secure your valuables. They are a good size and measure 8” x 10.5”. There is also a small zippered pocket on the left sleeve that measures @ 3” wide by 5” long. This pocket is too small to hold an iPhone but it could hold keys, lip balm or similar small objects. This is a North Face Jacket, so you know you are getting a high quality, well made item that will last. This jacket functions well and looks great. It is very versatile and would look equally good around town as it would on a hike in the mountains. It’s an excellent jacket that you will wear a lot.

True fit
I recently purchased The North Face Men's Tek Approach Jacket, and overall, I’m very pleased with its performance. The jacket is a lightweight softshell windbreaker that feels comfortable for everyday wear and outdoor activities. The fleece lining adds a nice layer of warmth without making it bulky, and the water-resistant material does a decent job in light rain or mist. I especially appreciate the hand pockets, which are both convenient and warm. In terms of fit, the jacket is true to size and allows for easy movement. It’s ideal for hiking, running errands, or casual outings on cooler, windy days. While it’s not designed for heavy rain or extreme cold, it’s perfect for layering in transitional weather. Overall, I’d recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a versatile, lightweight, and comfortable softshell windbreaker that offers reliable wind and light water protection.

Lo stile The North Face è davvero bello. Per una vestibilità più rilassata avrei potuto prendere sicuramente la M ma questa mi calza come una seconda pelle, quindi soddisfatto.
