It's not really hot. More tart & tangy. I put it on sandwiches to kick them up a notch.

Do the pickles need to be refrigerated after opening?

I believe they could be left out (my friend from India who introduced me to lemon pickle always does theirs), but I prefer to refrigerate mine. Very tasty however you choose to do it.
