All three of my kids love this (1 1/2 years to 6 years) and I love it it too! There are a lot of kids books out there that aren't worth the time and money. This is worth it - we read it over and over again!

Cute Book, Great Illustrations, Charming Premise, Very Short
This is a very cute book about an unusual friendship. Leo is a mail carrier (postman) who apparently has no friends, and while delivering countless letters to other people, he never receives his own (lucky guy, he must not get any bills either). He finds a small bird he has to care for until he grows big/strong enough to fly on his own. As the seasons change, the bird flies off leaving poor Leo alone again. I won't spoil the ending, but you get the picture...The illustrations and cute story save this book, but it is short on words. I felt the beginning more interesting than the end. At this price point, I just wonder if the story line will get old quick for children. My four year old enjoyed it on first pass, but not in the same way as other books. As a parent, it's a very quick read and the illustrations are fun, but there are definitely other books that are more educational and fun.I'd say for 3 year olds, this is a good book, but for children 5 or older, it's going to be too short and simple.

Leo gets more than a letter...he gets a new friend. Cute and enjoyable story.
Leo is a letter carrier in a small (I believe it to be Italy) village. He delivers letters and packages of all kinds but has never received any for himself. One day he finds a bird in a mailbox that got left behind when the flock went south for the winter. Leo brings Cheep home and takes care of him. They become a family over the winter. But when spring comes, it is time for Cheep to fly with his flock again. Leo is sad to see him go, but goes back to his regular life and then what he really wants happens...he receives his first letter. The illustrations have a vintage feel to them due their muted colors. There is plenty of detail with lots to look at on each page. This is a simply told story about a letter carrier and what he wants most, but gets the added benefit of a new friend. There is a sprinkling of light humor throughout such as when Leo delivers a box of what looks like fishhooks to the fish family (what?!), pigs flying through the snow, and the bird language Cheep writes his letter in. This is a cute story that even the littlest ones will enjoy. Recommend for ages 3-7.
