why does my train slow down when it gets to a certain point on the track

Depending on the size and or connections throughout the track. The size makes a difference because the current maybe weak the further the locomotive goes away from the transformer. You may need to add another transformer or get a bigger size or add more electric current to the further most point of the tracks. You should check the connections of the track as well because a loose track could slow down or stop it all together.

No it doesn’t unless you put a smoke unit in it yourself or it will not smoke or possibly in the future they will install a smoke unit in the set out of the box but that is not that likely
