They stabilize your feet for the stairmaster and they help keep your feet flat and in place for leg presses etc. Other trainers are good for one or the other, these are very versatile. Lightweight, breathable, they feel durable and they look good. Also very comfortable. They come with a sole pre-installed in the shoe and a training sole with little bumps on them to help with sensory feedback in addition to the ones installed.
