The Vault contains some great treasures
Let me start off by saying, this book is gorgeous. I received it as a Father's Day gift and could not be happier. The photos inside look sharp and brilliant, not some cheesy, fuzzy multi-generational copy you often see in "unauthorized" books. The author, Scott Tipton, does a great job describing all the content, which is laid in in clever fashion. The book is designed with "inserts" that can be removed and examined, such as sketches, blueprints, storyboards, sticker reproductions from a collector's card set, reprint of a coloring book and even an iron-on! Spreading those out every 10 pages or so is great because it doesn't cause the pages to be too lumpy from to much pull-out material. The coverage is excellent as well. Not only does it cover all the TV shows from TOS to Enterprise (including the animated series) and the movies (with the odd exception of the 2009 movie since this book was published in 2011), but it also has highlight pages for things like Star Trek Tech, The Klingon culture and more. And don't forget the merchandise like toys, such as the excellent Mego line, comic books, models and even happy meal boxes and taco bell glasses from Star Trek 3. Oh, and there's a marshmallow holder, but you'll have to buy the book to find out what I'm talking about...because nothing says Star Trek like marshmallows???The only thing really missing for me is more promo material from the TV shows. I would love to have seen TV guide or magazine ads for TOS or TNG (since I have never seen those). In fact, a nice page with all the times Trek appeared on a TV Guide cover would have been cool. But that is a very small issue as it is the only thing I can really site. But again, that's just something I wanted to see. Can't have everything in the book or you could never lift it, right? I was going to give the book fours stars for this omission, but why be "that guy."So, if you call yourself a Star Trek fan, do yourself a favor, and pick this up. Overall, this book is quite beautiful to look at. The page designs are slick without going over the top. The inserts are sometimes just a piece of paper inside another piece of paper glued to the page, so just take it slow when removing and re-inserting the items so you don't tear anything. Now if I grab the "Star Trek 365" book to have even more archival photos...my head just might explode!

A large "vault", but feels kind of empty
As someone who can claim that he owns almost every single non-fiction book about the making of Star Trek ever published, I can say that this is definitely not one of the best, and in fact if you are like me and DO own most of the "about Star Trek" books, you could probably even skip this one. Information-wise, this book tries to cram the stories of all the Star Trek series, movies, and even merchandising, but unfortunately with so much to tell, it doesn't amount to much information at all. I would think that to pull off such a huge task successfully you would have to divide it into several books, much like Marc Cushman's "These Are The Voyages" series is attempting to do. (As of this writing, there is only the first season published of that title). But like another reviewer stated, it seems like this book is just skimming the surface of all things Trek. Just sampling the tip of each incarnation's iceberg, without even coming close to telling the whole story, especially when so much of it focuses on merchandising material from the series. There are so many books, written by so many people (cast members, producers, writers, fans, even stuntmen) and each of these books have a unique perspective and a slightly different story to tell. If you want to know about budgets and production problems you could read Justman's and Solow's book, for example. But this book seems to lack direction, just a mish-mosh of information, pictures and reproduced items (such as reproduced banners, blueprints, party invitations, and collectable baseball-type cards neatly tucked into pockets glued on to the pages. A somewhat unique idea amongst Trek books but still not enough to feel satisfied when you are finished. I came away feeling that each chapter devoted to one Star Trek TV or movie series was way too short, and a new chapter began before you even realized itThe quality of the colored pictures are great, but again most of the pictures are printed in other Star Trek books or even can be downloaded online from one of the many Star Trek fan sites. With the exception of the merchandising pictures and reproductions, there is really nothing new to see here. And even many of those reproductions can be found in another book called "Star Trek: The Complete Unauthorized History", another so-so book about behind the scenes Star Trek. Recommendations, Mr. Spock? The previously mentioned "These Are The Voyages", "Captain's Logs", or the classic "The Making of Star Trek", all do a better job of telling the Star Trek story. But if you're a collector, like me, you'll probably end up purchasing it anyway, browse through it once or twice and stick in on your bookshelf in between the other Trek books you have.

Outstanding Book Chronicling the History of the Star Trek Franchise
'Star Trek Vault' is everything that anyone could want in a coffee table book about Star Trek. It is big on photos and memorabilia, but has just enough descriptive text to make it interesting. It doesn't go into the detail that the avid Star Trek fan might want, but it tells enough of the story to explain why the Star Trek franchise is the greatest TV entertainment of all time. Each series (including The Animated Series) and both sets of movies (Original and Next Generation) are explored, and some great photos are revealed both of the characters and the sets that the programs were filmed upon. Interspersed within the chapters are a discussion of the associated memorabilia for each show, and the author even provides some 'faux' examples of some of them, including a Star Trek Coloring Book.I have been a Star Trek fan my entire life and this book does the franchise justice. It's highly readable, enjoyable, and well worth the investment. I would highly recommend it to fans and newbies alike.

Star Trek Vault
One of the best things I've ever bought. Complete coverage of 40 years that Star Trek has been around. Excellent.

Gene Roddenberry is Rolling in his Grave
To sum up my immediate disappointment, this book promised much - in fact the big glossy cover detailed with the inlaid image of the classic Enterprise's primary hull suggested it would be a Trekker's feast, but that is where the quality ended and the mundane began. These 'vault' books are supposed to be something special, are supposed to offer the purchaser/reader something which will enhance their reading pleasure and in most of them they have additional elements, often in pockets on certain pages which include posters, pull-out gimmicks and such, but in this volume these items consisted of a very poor and limited run of items. I honestly expected there to be at least some studio floor plans from the various productions - these were not even considered for publication. I expected to see some deck plans or even cutaway images, perhaps even some sketches of props - and these were also not included, with the exception of one solitary pretty basic image of Picard's Borg arm from The Best of Both Worlds. In short I would sum the book up as a series of basic articles, they were almost an insult to the hardcore Trekker - so if you want to follow my advice, don't purchase this book as it is both an insult to your wallet and to the Trek fan, which is very strange considering that the author is a well known writer and should have offered so very much more given the vast array of materials which could have been included. Gene Roddenberry would roll in his grave if he knew what a disservice his great work had been done.
