Tank: The Definitive Visual History of Armored Vehicles (DK Definitive Transport Guides)

I recently saw the movie Fury (directed by David Ayer and starring Brad Pitt) about a Sherman M4 tank and its crew during the Second World War. What intrigued me was how the crew worked in such a confined space so I bought the book. A big photo of the Sherman is shown on pages eighty-six and seven but turn over the page and I found twenty-six interior photos (all captioned). I think showing interior photos of several tanks (out of four hundred featured) is one of the strengths of the book. Dorling-Kindersley has done their excellent presentation with this title (and it puts to shame most other publishers of image-driven books) and it's worth noting the title: a visual history. The contents are not descriptions of great tank battles or personal reminiscences of tank crews but page after page of photos (nicely as cutouts) revealing tanks through past decades. Each has some brief technical details and a few words of background about the vehicle. Missing, I found, were any measurements and some tanks are impressively huge. I liked the fourteen pages at the back of the book, looking at the tanks' evolution, engines, tracks and suspension, firepower, protection, anti-tank weapons and uniforms. These pages are followed by a glossary and index. DK's tank book is a fascinating look at a unique bit of military kit. We went to the Bovington tank museum and had a guided tour of the section that contained the tank that a relative drove during WW2. We were so interested that we forgot to take any photos of that section. Because this book has participation from the tank museum, we got this book. The book is suitable for ages 10yrs and up. It is clear, well presented and the many photographs make it an accessible book and we found it supported the tank museum's exhibits very well. This book covers many tanks, so is not going to be a book of great detail on any particular exhibit, but amounts to a good photo guide, with enough detail for most people. This book is by DK, which is a guarantee of great presentation. We got the kindle edition, so that when we return to the museum, we have a detailed guide with us.

Loved this great pics tons of info worth the price although on kindle you do have go zoom in to read the writing. Otherwise great book.

Literally an encyclopaedia of tanks - you’ll know your IFVs from your APCs by the end, and everything in between. All the better if you’ve been to the Tank Museum at Bovington as all/many of the pictures are from their collection and the historic walkthrough the development is similar to the layout of the museum.

I bought this as a gift for a friend who has a keen interest in tanks. It’s a huge book, packed to the brim full of photographs and information about tanks from their origins to modern day. I’d recommend it for anyone who is interested in tanks! It was a very successful gift!

The publisher knows how to present material in an informative and engaging way. A big book beautifully illustrated with a narrative that doesn't get in the way. An excellent reference as well if you want to drill into a particular tank. Under £20 is great value for a large format, full colour book running to 250 pages. Excellent.

Très beau livre de collectionneur

This book is more of a quick overview than a really deep exploration of the topic. I wish it had more in the way of tables and timelines, but really, as a "coffee table book for dudes," it's pretty great. The printing is high quality and what information there is all seems to be accurate and concise.
