5CD set; an essential release for Byrds and country rock fans. Featuring two solo albums from The Byrds/Flying Burrito Brothers member. Plus solo live recordings spanning his career and a live album from the Gene Parsons Band, as well as unreleased studio demos. Review: Long overdue reissue treatment for brilliant Gene Parsons - Gene Parsons is someone who should be known to anybody with even a passing interest in bluegrass, country, folk or rock music. This extraordinary musician - wait for it - drums, vocals, acoustic flat-picker/ finger picker, electric guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, pedal steel, bass, song-writer and erstwhile mechanic, designer of B-bender, is a listening pleasure with everything he does. First got to to know of him many years ago through the Nashville West album (which i bought in Nashville!) and The Byrd's Untitled album with Clarence White and featuring Gene's brilliant sparring with Skip Battin on a 16-minute Eight Miles High, (check all this out if you haven't already). I have my vinyl copy of Kindling (originally belonging to my musician father) for many years and was delighted to see that this release was coming up. This is music that uplifts and moves at its own pace - only musicians of this quality can do this. The genius Clarence White plays a more subtle role on the main album which turned out to be one of his last recorded performances - one of music's all-time tragic premature losses. The Melodies album is beautiful as is all of the live stuff. Get this set while you can. By the way, check out Gene's workshed in his interviews! Nuff said, brilliant, 5/5! Review: Who would have thought??? - When I learned, late last year, that a Gene Parsons box set was forthcoming, I could hardly believe my luck. It is wonderful, all of it, but especially the third, fourth and fifth discs of previously unreleased or hard-to-find live and demo recordings. I spoke with Gene on a couple of occasions in 1994 when he and Meridian Green did a short tour of the UK and found him to be very approachable and unassuming. A real gent! And yet, his CV is phenomenal, his multi-instrumental abilities staggering and his co-invention of the string-bender guitar a wonder of music from the last 60 years. i look forward to a third solo album and forthcoming autobiography from him. 'Kindling and Beyond' is a must for any collector, not just for Byrds devotees.
