Great book but hard for an English speaker
This book is great for intermediates and I never felt like the grammar was too hard or too easy. However all the explanations are in German which makes it a little bit challenging to understand but I am still able to make progress

First-rate for the serious learner.
I have been using this book to teach myself German from scratch and have found it outstanding. The text is entirely in German but for anyone who has already learnt a language or two and has a good knowledge of grammar in general, this should not present a problem, and it certainly accelerates the learning. I used the book initially in conjunction with the Collins online German-English dictionary, which gives pronunciation and was perfectly adequate for giving the meanings of words in the early stages before I could use a German to German dictionary. I also had the answer book for the exercises (Losungsschlussel), the book of additional exercises (Testheft, available from Amazon.de - not really necessary but useful), and the accompanying CDs.You are thrown straight in on the first page to plenty of simple exercises to practise and reinforce the grammatical points and vocabulary, and this is the pattern throughout. The exercises are straightforward drilling - never leaving you at a loss - and there is plenty of repetition of vocabulary and grammatical points. The book itself does not provide a selection of reading passages, but I found I was able to complement it very quickly beginning with simplified readers and moving on from there. The coverage of German grammar and vocabulary is in-depth and comprehensive. This is a course for those who want to learn German properly and seriously - to be able to read it fluently, write it when necessary, and, to some extent, hear and speak it. I supplemented it with the excellent Langenscheidt "Phonothek intensiv: Aussprachetraining" for practice in listening and speaking. The course is not designed for those who only want some "tourist German" (whatever that is), and unlike so many German courses it is not condescending, and does not assume that you are a brainless twenty-year old interested only in socialising and going to discos. But for anyone committed to learning the language properly, this is, in my opinion, the best course on the market.
