Screen icon Steve McQueen (Love with the Proper Stranger, Bullitt) is at his rugged best in this totally captivating tale of a fading rodeo champion from acclaimed director Sam Peckinpah (The Getaway, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, Convoy). With his bronco-busting career on it's last legs, Junior Bonner (McQueen) heads to his hometown to try his luck in the annual rodeo. But his fond childhood memories are shattered when he finds his family torn apart by his greedy brother (Joe Don Baker, Framed) and hard-drinking father (Robert Preston, The Music Man). Now Junior must break the wildest bull in the West to bring his family together for one final moment of cowboy glory in the roughest, rowdiest ride of his life! Junior Bonner is an extraordinarily graceful yet unflinching rendering of a slice of Americana, beautifully shot by the great Lucien Ballard (The Ballad of Cable Hogue) and featuring a top-notch cast which also includes Ida Lupino (Road House), Ben Johnson (The Wild Bunch), Mary Murphy (Beachhead), Dub Taylor (Burnt Offerings), Don Red Barry (Shalako) and Bill McKinney (Deliverance).

Fascinating Slice of American Pie
You can walk away from "Junior Bonner" having seen every Sam Peckinpah and Steve McQueen film and not know that either contributed to this low-key gem. It's a tribute to both legends that they eschewed vanity to create a film that feels like real life. I don't know how long it took Peckinpah to lens this film but it feels like he just took his camera for a few days to capture the ambiance of Prescott, Arizona on a Fourth of July Weekend when the rodeo came to town. Having never been to a rodeo or seen any films about it I found the way Peckinpah captures the people, the sights, and sounds thrilling. Anybody whose followed the career of Steve McQueen knows that he was the master of understatement. Here he gracefully captures the essence of an aging rodeo star who goes from one show to the next in hopes of winning the $950.00 in prize money. Peckinpah populates the cast with legendary actors like Robert Preston, Ida Lupino, and Ben Johnson along with notable character actors like Joe Don Baker and William McKinney. This ensemble of actors are terrific because they seem like real people who've been part of the rodeo world or Prescott landscape their whole lives. Needless to say, a must for Peckinpah or McQueen fans and essential viewing for all film lovers.

"Total Steve McQueen Grit and Genius"
This in my opinion is his best movie! And it's not because of his character which he makes look as easy as any he has portrayed in his other hits but the entire movie was also stellar in so many ways. A Peckinpah movie which was a contradiction from his normal releases which tend to be very violent for those times but it was cast with individuals like Robert Preston, Ida Lupino and Ben Johnson who were at the ends of their careers and helped make this a subtle but powerful saga of a cowboy looking for just one more ride on a bull that couldn't be ridden to keep him in the game. Old school for sure but pure soul food for for us baby boomers that grew up with McQueen and his contemporaries. Enjoy......

Sunshine the bull and others
Sam Peckinpah's version of the old rodeo lights up the screen with a solid, slightly sentimental character study of rodeo star JR Bonner and family. JR is played by the prince of charm: old Steve McQueen himself. JR returns to his home town for the Forth of July rodeo only to find things changing rapidly. Real estate forces are sweeping the old west town of Prescott Arizona, bulldozing houses and setting up trailer parks. Money hungry Brother Curley Bonner is behind the transformation casting resentment on the part of JR who is a man just like his father: Ace Bonner: a classic romantic old rodeo cowboy with no money and big dreams. JR gets worked over by a nasty bull in a recent contest and seems to have no other motive in the film than to beat mean old Sunshine for 8 seconds.Sam P. does a good entertaining job of describing a rodeo town, country western life and the rough action of a rodeo.I've got to say whoever meat-axed the moving title song "Arizona Morning" needs his ears washed out with soap. It was one of the finest mood setting choices of the movie. I was really looking forward to hearing that.Reading some other reviews I was surprised Barbara Leigh is rarely mentioned. Her stunning beauty is fun to admire and her brief role reveals to us how much an old rodeo star loves his rodeo. So much so that he would tip his hat and move on to the next rodeo rather than take up with the prettiest girl in the west. This movie is a fun romp, not tragic, full of charm, and reveals to us things moving into history are in some ways better than the harsh steel of the future.

McQUEEN AT HIS BEST!
OVER HIS CARREER, McQUEEN HAS DONE HIS FAIR SHARE OF WESTERNS & THIS IS ONE OF HIS BETTER ONES! HE PLAYS A MODERN DAY DOWN & OUT RODEO COWBOY, WHO IS LOOKING FOR THAT SPECIAL RIDE THAT WILL PUT HIM BACK ON TOP, WHILE TRYING TO MEND HIS FAMILY IN THE PROCESS! I THOUGHT IT WAS AN OUTSTANDING MOVIE, THAT WAS WELL ACTED & I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

Great old movie
I was so happy to find the movie on Amazon. It's enjoyable and a wonderful addition to my video library. If you enjoy rodeo or just a nice evening with a good flick I recommend Junior Bonner, plus there are some great pictures of Precott, AZ back in the day.

Moved To Prescott
My kids moved to Prescott, and the movie posters for this film are everywhere; on Whiskey Row, at the Waffler Iron, at the Sharlott Hall Museum, there's something just short of a shrine. So I went ahead and bought it to see what all the fuss was about. Well, it's a disappointing, boring movie. It is however, pretty much what the rodeo circuit looked like. As a kid I found myself spending a lot of time around horses, real cowboys, circa 1960's, '70's and Steve McQueen's character and the family pretty much nails the appearance and vibe. Meanwhile, if you're a Prescott residence, this film borders on home movies. You've got the town parade, some historical perspectives, shots of place, like the train station, that are still there, sans the tracks.

Just Marvelous
This is a marvelous movie. Although I wasn't there, it presents what seems likely to be a very realistic portrayal of rodeo life. Steve McQueen is extremely likable as Junior Bonner, an aging rodeo cowboy watching the world change around him. His acting in Junior Bonner is a very effective rebuttal to anyone who thinks of him as anything less than a first rate actor; I can't think of anyone else who would be better for the part. Ida Lupino & Robert Preston as his parents are also just perfect, as is Ben Johnson as a rodeo contractor & friend to Junior Bonner. The whole movie portrays a world & way of life which even then were disappearing & are now gone forever. This is a movie that, as they say, rewards multiple viewings. I've watched it several times & each time I like it more. I think this must have been a labour of love for Sam Peckinpah. Be forewarned, if your idea of entertainment is computer generated special effects & moronic superheroes or even the western bloodfests which came into vogue about the time of Junior Bonner, this movie is not for you.

Yo he quedado contento.
