Inspect each disc on purchase
I subscribe to Audible. Unlike many of its members once I have downloaded titles to my laptop I prefer to burn a copy to CD. To this end I have always used Verbatim’s ‘Extra Protection’ CD-R discs (the upper surface has a white coating on which anything written with a CD marker pen stands out clearly, although Verbatim’s ‘Azo’ CD-R discs can be written on with a CD marker pen and work just as well). It was always my understanding that Verbatim were one of the most reliable manufacturers of blank, recordable CDs/DVDs.Since I use a lot of discs it is cheaper to buy 100 spindle packs. However, on at least two occasions in the last few years I have bought packs containing a significant number of defective discs. One pack I bought from the local branch of a national retailer and the other came from Amazon – and I am pleased to say that there was no problem about exchanging both of the defective packs (a straight refund was also possible). It is very simple to identify a defective disc before using it. There are tiny, irregular blemishes, pin head sized or larger and easily visible to the eye, to the under (recording) surface – which should have a smooth, mirror-like appearance with no markings. Judging by my own experience, and that noted by other reviewers, Verbatim appears to have a problem with quality control and occasional batches of bad discs slip through. Quite why that should happen I do not understand. It should be simple enough for all discs to be checked/scanned during the manufacturing process to reject suspect discs. With the discs from Amazon, once I realised there was a problem, I manually checked the under surface of each remaining disc in the pack. About 35 to 50% were defective. On the website I instigated a return and requested a replacement (making clear that the goods supplied were defective) and one was sent the same day. I returned the defective pack to Amazon later that week by Royal Mail using Amazon’s pre-paid label. However, I took the precaution of adding a note to the returned pack, explaining that the discs were defective, explaining why, and requesting that the entire pack be destroyed – I did that to make clear that they should not be ‘refurbished’ (i.e. re-packaged and re-sold). I hope this has not happened in the past but I did notice some strange marks to some of the discs, which looked as if they might been left by someone else’s fingers – marks that one would not expect to find on a freshly manufactured, pristine product.I shall continue to use Verbatim discs but in future will manually inspect each disc in a pack as soon as I receive my order and not simply assume that they are all of good quality. Other buyer would be well advised to do the same.

Consistent Quality and Value for Money
I've burned over 150 discs to date and not a single failure so far. They're not the cheapest discs on the market but their reliability makes them very good value for money.
