Highly entertaining and well-crafted ; one of the more collectible superhero movies.
Marvel's first flagship comic book title hasn't generally been well-served when the conversation's turned to movie adaptations, to put it mildly. This is the exception. This translation of "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" to the big screen got just about everything right with this 2007 sequel to 2005's fun but rocky "Fantastic Four." Casting, effects, art direction, script, and dialogue are all first-rate and tastefully handled, with sexy Jessica Alba a standout and knockout as Sue Storm. I also liked Ioan Gruffudd a lot as Mr. Fantastic, Michael ("The Commish") Chiklis as Ben Grimm, and Chris Evans in its first superhero role as hotshot John (not Johnny) Storm, re-imagined as an even brasher personality. I'm usually unhappy with recasting characters I've gotten used to as Caucasians as minorities for the sake of PC, but I also really enjoyed Kerry Washington's turn as a lovely and charismatic take on The Puppet Master's daughter and Ben's beau, Alicia. The potentially problematic depictions of Sue's invisibility, Reed's stretching and malleability, and Johnny's flaming on are all strikingly surmounted here. This was shortly before the deluge of MCU superhero movies, each of which progressively featured staggeringly updated and state of the art digital effects, so what the filmmakers have done here early on is really pretty remarkable and worthy of kudos without the need for patronizing or "overlooking" compliments. The prosthetic conceptualization for The Thing is particularly strong, and doesn't look fake or cheesy at all, as one might dread. (I'd take exception to a comment left on amazon in one of these reviews that the character is portrayed as too small, and closer to the size of a normal man, instead of as big as The Hulk. He isn't. See the cover of issue #25 of the initial run of the comic for evidence.) Most spectacular of all is the realization of the Silver Surfer, which is dynamic and thrilling to watch in every scene. It's a masterpiece of CGI special effects art in itself, by any yardstick. The Fantastic Four comic has always been first and foremost about the adventures of a family. So I was happy that this quality was very much present in the script, and also that much of the character interaction has warmth and is smile-inducing and actually funny. This motif of family has always been what's set the FF off from other superhero characters.I've seen this in a theater and on DVD, but this movie looks particularly fabulous on Blu-ray, with exciting color and sharp definition, neither of which take the edge off the extremely well-rendered effects. This is a terrific title to add to any superhero Blu-ray collection. It's too bad we'll never see this cast again in another Fantastic Four movie, but the projected third of a trilogy was deep-sixed in development hell. I doubt that any new ensemble that Disney and Marvel may or may not be thinking about putting together will be as personable.(PS: Yep, Stan Lee has a cameo. And there's even a brief mid-credits scene!)

FANTASTIC PICTURE AND SOUND!!!
First, the negative reviews below need checking out. The one saying that half of the players won't play it is bogus. It has been determined only two models of Blu-ray players haven't been able to play the movie, not half! Second, the one from Wiggins is obviously a HD-DVD fanatic. Check out his other reviews and you will see he only knocks the two recent Blu-ray titles but gives glowing reviews to anything HD-DVD. It is obvious he doesn't have FF or Day After Tomorrow, that he is just rehashing news to scare away anyone from buying anything Blu-ray. Very immature.I played the FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer movie last night and it is gorgeous. The story isn't that great, but did we buy Hi-Def for story? No, the visuals make up the story. And, wow, the clarity of the images is something to see, definitely one of the best to come out on Blu-ray. Breathtaking at times in the depth. There is a DTS track, too, which sound phenomenal! Together, audio and video, make a powerful experience. As to the extras, many of them are also in 1080p, and there are a lot of them. I admit the two games moved a little bit slow, but otherwise okat. (They are nothing special, anyway. One that runs slow is a trivia game, no big deal. The other is a strategy game but you don't do anyting but pick planets in the game.) All the other extras work perfectly. I am sure a firmware uprade will correct the slowness of the games (and HD-DVD fans are jumping all over this, forgetting, however, the HD-DVD machines they have have had to go through firmware upgrade after upgrade after upgrade) (Let he who is without upgrades cast the first stone).Loading time for the disc is a bit longer than Pirates of the Caribbean, but that's fine, I am in no hurry. All in all, I would recommended seeing this title.

Better than the first FF movie
This was much better than the first movie. I liked it enough to purchase a Blue Ray copy. One thing I didn't like was that they failed to show Galactus who is the Silver Surfers's boss. There is a scene in the end where Galactus is supposed to be in the clouds but that was just plain dumb.Speaking of dumb, I really hate how they change certain things and events and even people's skin color from the comics that I grew up with. Some things are ok like having Spiderman shoot webbing from his body rather than from those cartridges that he invented in the comic book. There is no way those small cartridges could hold enough webbing to go downtown and back let alone make parachutes and other items. Also there was no way to tell when they were near to empty. But changing a guys skin color is stupid as in the latest video game Ultimate Avengers, which features Nick Fury as a black guy. He is white in the comics and should have stayed white (I'm black by the way)I don't know who the next villian will be but I hope they don't pick one of the weak ones (and keep featuring him in subsequent films)like the Goblin in the Spiderman movies. FFROTSS is a step up from the weak, uninteresting first FF movie and may the next one be even better.

A Fantastic Follow-Up
Even at the risk of killing the already lame joke, this is a fantastic movie, and an engaging sequel to the first Fantastic 4 film. If possible, this movie is even more "over-the-top" than its predecessor. With the shadow of armageddon looming ever closer, the Fantastic 4 must stop the Silver Surfer from contacting his cosmic master, Galactus, and save our planet from annihilation. The cast reprises their roles from the previous film, and the chemistry is just as magical in this movie as it was in the last. The greatest addition, however comes from an actor who doesn't even appear in the movie. Laurence Fishburne's voice was a perfect fit for the character of the Silver Surfer. His voice carried wisdom, power, and a certain gravitas needed to help bring Norrin Radd to life. Sadly, this is the last film of the Fantastic 4 franchise, and without a doubt, the greatest. Rise of the Silver Surfer is a gem that speaks to the superhero-loving child in all of us.
