Review: Great Lock and the Key is in Your Head - This Schlage electronic keypad deadbolt has a trusted design that has been around for a number of years. We had our old nickel one for about five years and it has been very reliable. That one moved from the front door to the garage side door and we now have a Smartkey lock with remote key fob on the front entry to the house. When it came to installing a lock for our studio door we went back to the Schlage because of its price and reliability. The new lock has had some minor improvements from the original we bought a few years ago. These revisions make installation easier with simple inexpensive additions to the original internal design. As I had mentioned, installation is easy. The lock comes with two bolt length options. The most significant change to our old lock was the wire that feeds from the front keypad to the rear panel. With the old lock you had a thin wire with a TINY cap that pressed onto a pin on a circuit board on the back. It was incredibly fiddly when you consider that the sprung fastened cap was only about 0.08 inches or 2mm in diameter. In this new lock, it was a simple plastic plug that you just press in and it snaps into place. Sounds trivial but it removed minutes of frustration. After the basic assembly as shown in the first video on the desertcart page, you just plug in the included 9 volt battery and follow simple instructions in the manual to program your lock. One nice thing I really like about this lock is that the deadbolt uses a clutch to engage the handle. You use the keypad to engage the clutch that lets the deadbolt work. After a few seconds the clutch is automatically disengaged and the latch spins freely. This makes it fairly tamper proof. In some ways it’s safer than our remote lock because there is less chance of someone trying to hack the lock remotely with some kind of wifi connection. We had our previous one for about five years and still use it on a daily basis. So I can tell you this lock is dependable. If you change the battery once a year you will probably never have to worry about it going flat. So far, I have replaced the battery on the old one every 12 to 18 months regardless of capacity and have used the old one for various electronic devices. These locks can also be opened with a regular key. Two are provided. We keep ours safe in a location where we can retrieve one in an emergency. Originally we bought this lock after a key broke in our old fashioned one. We had to call out a locksmith who spent three hours trying to drill out the old lock. It made a lot of noise, caused us (and our neighbors) a lot of frustration and then (to add insult to injury) cost us almost $300. That’s the price of three of these locks. So we bought this lock and we are so glad we did. It makes life so much easier not having to carry keys around. The keypad is illuminated and easy to use in the dark. You never have to fumble looking for keys. It’s a great addition to our garage and studio because of the number of times you go to the garage on some chore only to find the keys are back at the house. With the studio which is on a wing of the house we used to leave it unlocked because the frustration of going back and forth for keys seemed like a lot of hassle. We really like these locks. You can have several codes. Each member of our family has their own pin. We gave our sister in law one so they could crash even if we aren’t home. And we can create one on a whim should we have contractors or pet sitters visiting when we are away. When they first came out they were about 50% more expensive but they’re affordable now and I can’t recommend them enough. The only problem you might have with this lock is if you pull to close it really helps to have a second handle to grip and hold the door shut while you turn the handle. The twist knob on the deadbolt is not the easiest to grip and pull strongly, especially while twisting at the same time. For the garage and studio door we bought a cheap dummy knob to hold onto for this reason. That does the trick quit nicely.
Review: Simple, tough, and reliable - As a locksmith, I’m comfortable claiming that this is one of the most reliable and robust manual-electronic deadbolts you can get. The whole back plate is heavy metal, as is the keyed cylinder turn knob. There’s not much that can ever go wrong with it when properly installed, as the bolt movement is manual and just the release solenoid is electric. Just be sure to tuck the battery cables inside the lock and only install the inside plate once the cam the tailpiece runs through is straight up and down (it moves to activate the position sensor as the bolt moves). It’s programmed at the keypad only - no Bluetooth or WiFi. Once the code(s) are set, just type in the digits and turn knob to unlock. Press the Schlage button and turn toward door frame to lock. Very simple and few points of potential failure. Read the manual before installing!

This Schlage electronic keypad deadbolt has a trusted design that has been around for a number of years. We had our old nickel one for about five years and it has been very reliable. That one moved from the front door to the garage side door and we now have a Smartkey lock with remote key fob on the front entry to the house. When it came to installing a lock for our studio door we went back to the Schlage because of its price and reliability. The new lock has had some minor improvements from the original we bought a few years ago. These revisions make installation easier with simple inexpensive additions to the original internal design. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Installation was easy, but it died after just a few uses

I took the lock out of the box and 'played' with it following the instructions to make sure I know how it'll work. Sure enough, it seemed pretty easy to put the 4 main components together (center bolt, front plate w/ the buttons, back plate, and then back cover). I was able to follow the instructions to re-program all the codes that came with the unit. The next day, the actual installation took all 10 min. In fact, removing the existing deadbolt was harder than installation of the new one. Luckily, the existing hole in the door was perfect and no extra work needed [the deadbolt that was there was also a Schlege]. The fit and finish was very good. I've to see if it works any worse in the winter, which can get to 0F here. Another poster mentioned it didn't work in the cold so I'm a little wary. Also, I wonder whether the unit gives the warning when the battery goes low. It'd bad to lose function unexpected. One thing about using the key. It's a little difficult to pull out the key after locking or unlocking with it rather than using the keypad. It might be something I need to get used to over time. Update after 1 month: I am EXTREMELY Disappointed because the combo function became unresponsive out of the blue one morning. This is after at most 10 uses since I was out of town all but 1 week during the entire month. It's not the battery (has plenty of life in it and I also tried another battery). Luckily I had the key or else I'd have been locked out. I don't know if it's because the weather was cool & humid (early Oct in the Northeast) and there was condensation on the lock which may have seeped inside the covers. Given this is an exterior lock, you'd think it should withstand weather like this. My door is under a porch so it's not like rain pours on it. Word of advice: Carry your keys or hide it somewhere just in case the lock dies on you. That's what I'm doing from now on. Update after 10+ yrs. I got a new unit right after writing the orig review and it had been working great all these years, changing battery 2x in 10 yrs. I love not having to fumble w keys when I'm in a hurry to leave the house- just press the top button and rotate the bolt to lockup. And coming home in the dark, it's so much easier to open the door w the buttons than trying to put the key in the keyhole. But I still find it difficult to pull out the key after all these years. At year 10, it finally died... as in when the codes are entered, the buttons light up green but the latching mechanism does not engage. At first I thought it was bad 9v batteries but after getting new ones multiple tunes, I'm convinced it's the lock. Called Schlege and they sent me a brand new one! That's why I'm changing my rating from 1 star to 5 stars... The lifetime warranty means this is the last deadbolt lock I ever need to buy.
