Does the shader literally sit on top of the light bulb?

No, the shade does not sit on the light bulb. That would be a fire hazard.

I really don’t get how the shade is suppose to sit on this haha can someone else/post a picture?

There is a piece already screwed at the base. Twist it off , put the shade on and then twist that piece back on. Then screw in the bulb.

What kind of lightbulb does this need? What size of bulb?

Standard A type bulb. I believe I put a 60 watt equivalent LED in mine

Does the cord come out of the bottom of the base?

The cord comes out of the middle of the base right under where the light socket is...you can pull the cord thru the base cage so that it is in the back (it is hardly noticeable). Hope this helps.
